Recipe for making your own gelatin plate. You can increase the pan size as needed, use the same ratio of gelatin to water.
8" square pan- disposable aluminum
4 packets of unflavored gelatin
1 cup of cold water
1 cup of boiling water
Empty the 4 packets of gelatin into the pan and pour in the cold water. Stir to dissolve completely. Add in the boiling water. Stir. Mixture should be clear. Skim the surface bubbles off with a piece of paper. Leave to set up. You can place it in the refrigerator to firm.
Gently take the gelatin sheet out of the pan and place on a plastic surface. Now go have fun.

This video didn't answer the main question I had (which is how to consistently print a bunch if fabric) but watching you is just so much fun and inspiring. I imagine taking a class from you is a blast and awakes an avalanche of creativity!

apologies, I didn't see this earlier. I was sick for months last year. If I read your question accurately...you are not sure how to print fabric with a consistent or cohesive look? When I want more fabrics that will work together in a larger project I limit my colors and print on larger pieces of fabric so the print patterns can overlap and blend together. I keep adding to a fabric as the paint dries. Working in layers helps create cohesive fabrics. Let me know if I read your question correctly.

It seems like there would be some interesting potential if you used one of those denser screens for a resist rather than for paint...
@Textileevolution

Absolutely, they can also be used with discharge products if you have dyed fabric. So many possibilities!

I'm really excited about making this gelli plate ... But ... It would help if you specified the size or weight of the packet of gelatin. Not all packets are the same???
@Textileevolution
@Textileevolution 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, the standard Knox brand gelatin has about 2 teaspoons of gelatin (7grams). I haven't measured other brands but generally use the packet count. I have used gelatin in bulk but when I am traveling the packets are easier to transport and use.

Thank you, Liz! I have several gelli plates, but am going to try making my own. You said you had made one like 22x36 (or something like that-what on earth did you use for a mold? Wracking my brain….

For the giant one I put heavy duty plastic on a table then built a dam with pottery clay. My intention was to remove the clay afterwards but it didn't create a big lip so just printed with the clay around the border. I know some people use sheet trays (restaurant supply). They are too big to remover from the pan so you will get paint buildup around the edges.

i guess my question is the hand of the fabric the same if you use a paint like Jaquard, pebeo, etc.
@Textileevolution
@Textileevolution 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Patricia, Those paints need to be mixed with textile medium simply because they are more of a heavy body consistency. I have used Dye-Na-Flow too. You get a very watercolor feel and it doesn't hold patterns as well.
@LizKettle
@LizKettle 3 жыл бұрын
It is harder to get a thin layer of paint with the heavy body paints which is why I recommend adding a textile medium to thin them down. You can use them as is but it is the amount of paint that changes the hand. You can use water to thin paint down but if you use too much you will break the molecular bonds in the paint.

Living in Denmark I dont know What delipaper is. Maybe I spell it wrong ?
@Textileevolution
@Textileevolution 2 жыл бұрын
Deli paper is a waxed paper used to wrap sandwiches at a Delicatessen (deli) in the US. It is not as heavily waxed as waxed paper in the grocery store. It is a bit heavier/stronger than tissue paper. I did find this link so you can get a better idea of what it is. I don't know if this is expensive. It is a big package. It is wonderful to use to create in collage. www.desertcart.dk/products/48485951-gordon-choice-deli-wax-paper-10-500-deli-wax-paper-10-x-10-75-pack-of-500

Hi Liz, My question deals with the brayers...which is preferred...soft. or hard...And which application do you use them
@LizKettle
@LizKettle 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Lucia, I use a soft brayer. I use them for spreading paint on the plate and also to create texture by placing fabric on top of a textured item such as those woven placemats I showed and running a paint covered brayer over them. The brayer picks up the texture of the item. Hope that makes sense.
