Create Groups by Visual Binning in SPSS: Mastering Variables

As you work with your variables in SPSS, transforming or recoding them into variables that are most useful to you, you may want to break the variables into bands of data, such as quartiles, quintiles, or percentiles. This video will teach you how to simply find the cutpoints in a dataset using the Frequencies command and how to create an entirely new variable that contains scores for quartiles, etc. This will add to your skill set for mastering variables in SPSS.

Hi Prof, I have an age variable in the range of 3 years to 9 years. What would be an appropriate cut points?

Age 3 to 9 would probably be best with very small (one or two year) bands. That is because children mature so quickly. If the ages were 43 to 49, I would say 5 or maybe 10 year bands. With kinds, it is better to be more precise. Good luck

@@ResearchByDesign Dear Sir, I have just 18 Cows whose ages are 3 (f=2), 4 (f=1), 6 (f=1), 7(f=10), 8(f=3), and 9(f=1) [f= frequency). And I want to made into 2 categories out of this. I am new to statistics and it is little problem for me. I have binary dichotomous dependent variable. I wanted to perform Chi-Square between the Age category and Estrus response (Y/N). Huge thanks.

In my SPSS, it shows Optimal Binning instead of Visual Binning. Is this an error?

That may be an update/change in the newest SPSS...I will look into it.
