For the SSAS data source yes! This is because it is defined on the SSAS end in the model. And the end users credentials will be passed if you are using windows auth, or hard code the server admin and check the box to impersonate the user. This will use EffectiveUserName.

The dataset/data model is tied to the report when you publish the PBIX to Power BI Report Server. You can't access it the way you can from the Power BI Service though. It is technically there though and needs to be refreshed. Assuming you aren't doing DirectQuery.

Is RLS the same in Power BI Reporting Services as in the main service?
@GuyInACube6 жыл бұрын
With regards to Power BI Reports, you can still create roles within Power BI Desktop for imported models. So, that part is the same. For live connections and DirectQuery, the Windows token can be passed to the data source within PBIRS, so that will allow native support for RLS in that data source. Note, that Kerberos is required to be configured for that to work. For Analysis Services, you can configure the data source within PBIRS to use EffectiveUserName to bypass the kerberos configuration.

@zorro63236 жыл бұрын
We are running Power BI Report Server and find that you can still publish to the report server and/or view reports without a Power BI Pro license. Does that make sense? It doesn't jive with the other voices I'm hearing out there that state that Power BI report developers/publishers (for the on-premises server) still have to be licensed with Power BI Pro. We have SQL Server 2016 EE + SA, so I don't know if that makes the difference, say per licensing a Power BI report server using Power BI Premium. Can you shed some light on this confusing licensing for Power BI report server publishing? Perhaps this a licensing "honor system" instituted by Microsoft as there seems to be no licensing requirement to publish to our Power BI Report Server that was deployed under our SQL Server EE + SA arrangement. All we have to do to ensure a user can publish to the assigned folder/space in Power BI (on-premises) Report Server is that they have the required permissions to the target folder they are publishing to on the report server itself.

Your mileage may vary. No guarantee. If it was created with a version of Power BI Desktop before the released version of Power BI Report Server, it should work. The problem will be if you create a report with a version of Power BI Desktop released after the release of Power BI Report Server. There may be updates within Power BI Desktop that Power BI Report Server doesn't understand and could result in errors.

Hi Adam,If I am not mistaken, you need a special Desktop edition to publish to Server.There are many old visuals there, for instance: Matrix and Table that do not allow drill-down, you cannot change column headers, etc.When are the updates to the visuals (that are happenning all the time in the regular Destop) suppose to be updated to the Server edition?And another question: is there a possibility to use custom visuals on-prem Server?Thank you.Michael

You can save a PBIX file to a SharePoint library, but it is just treated as a file store at that point. To open and interact with it, you would have to launch Power BI Desktop locally. To get the full integrated experience, PBIX files have to reside within Power BI Report Server or within the Power BI cloud service.

There are some organizations that cannot use the cloud service. Thinking of banks, some government organizations and medical. Or there may be a company that doesn't trust the cloud. This provides an option to avoid having anything in the cloud. This is about options for the customer. If they want to publish in the Power BI cloud service, then they have that option. If they just want to use this in an on-premises approach, that is available too. A lot of folks have been asking for this capability.

Hi Adam, Great video - thanks for that. 1 question though... If you have installed the Power BI Report Server as a different instance than the default, what path should be used when publishing the Power BI file to the server? In my case the report server instance name is PBIRS. So the url for my home page looks like this: edgarsb/PBIRS/browse/ I tried different options, like: edgarsb/reportserver$PBIRS/reports edgarsb/reportserver/reports$PBIRS but that did not work. Thanks for your help.
@GuyInACube7 жыл бұрын
The instance name will always be PBIRS :) You can't change that. It will always be based on what you named your virtual directories within the Report Server Configuration Manager. The defaults are reports for the web portal and reportserver for the Web services/Report Server. It looks like you changed the web portal virtual directory to be PBIRS. so it would be server/pbirs to get to the web portal. What did you do for the other virtual directory? is it still reportserver? if it is, then just do edgarsb/reportserver. Just use whatever it shows within the configuration manager.
