The travel medallion is actually not new with TOTK. It was introduced in the DLC for BOTW. You could get it from the big room with guardians under the labyrinth in Akkala.

@@ClayClaim also did you know if you have the dlc you can go to the maze in the top right corner and go in this hole next to the shrine you will be in this spooky room with a lot of guardians. But if you go all the way to the end of the room you will see a purple chest and you can get the travel medallion
