When I was making necks with the truss rod adjustment at the headstock end, I put the end of the truss rod at the far edge of the nut. This made access to the adjusting nut much easier. Putting the adjusting nut farther down in the neck makes access much more difficult. I now put the truss rod adjustment at the bridge-end of the neck.

Nice. Kind of relaxing doing the long mortise channel. For truss rod channel i immediately thought a plow plane but a score with the knife or a spurs every now or then is a must. Never trust the grain to do your biding 😁.

Absolutely, grain can do weird things. But then that’s what the cuts are for! 👍

Given that you're dealing with not only a longer neck, but increased tension from heavier strings- I'd place the truss rod as central in the neck as you can, so if the nut is covering the Allen head truss rod slot that would be to your advantage. However, keep the tension of the strings in mind when you cut the channel. You may want to make it with a bit of play so it can be adjusted easily without too much of a fight. Bravo on the neck- you're a fitter man than I am, Gunga Din!

I am still doing a lot of repairs, and have not installed a truss rod. I have a piece of Spanish Cedar laying here that will be used for my first neck. The first guitar that I am planning to build is a dreadnought acoustic. I am thinking of using walnut for the back and sides. But I still have about 7 major guitar repairs to complete so I don't know when I'll get started.

I often get asked why I cut the headstock wings off only to glue them on again later. It's much easier to dimension the neck when you're able to run a handplane down the entire length of it!

Easy fix on the truss rod, use a heal wheel adjuster.

My preference as well when I can. Previously I placed it right at the end of the fretboard, but this next one I’m recessing back just a little. This is looking great, Chris!

If you were to use a Gibson type truss rod needing an arched slot, would it still be possible to cut by hand?

I used your technique for making the truss rod slot and it worked beautifully. Do you have any tips on making a thinner slot for a carbon fiber rod? My rod is 3mm wide but my smallest chisel is 6mm.. Obvious answer is to get the right tool for the job.. but if that wasn't an option, how would you attack it?

Really the best bet is a 3mm chisel. I’ve made one out of a nail before!

sir i think i found a easier way to drill the trussrod adjustment hole on the headstock, i think i will make the headstock thinner before i drill the hole, is that possible ?,

Definitely possible. There are many way to do this, try a few to see which you prefer 👍
