Creating a leather glove pattern part 4: Assembling my free glove pattern

If you need a bit of help creating your glove pattern or you just want to sew a pair of gloves then this tutorial is just for you. I have a free pattern for you to download and use, even if it is just a confidence booster to get you underway. This tutorial shows you how to assemble the pattern to create your trank, thumb and fourchette templates, ready for making your gloves. I include lots of useful tips to help you from glueing to labelling your templates.

Hi Elizabeth, thanks very much for the video! Just wondering if the pattern size is specific to a particular material or if it would be ok to use for other materials?

Hi Joshua, I work with leather so the pattern will work for lamb nappa. You may need to adjust the pattern for other materials, for example, if there is a lot of stretch you may need to reduce the pattern or for very little stretch you may need to increase the dimensions. I talk about this a lot but this is where making a mock up can really help as you can then decide on the best course of action for the material you are using. Elizabeth

Hello Yves.I would advise checking your measurements against the pattern. Measure around your knuckle with the fist open and closed. My pattern is designed for 22cm open fist and 23cm closed. You would then need to check the length of the fingers. Here I would advise measuring the length of each finger and comparing it to the pattern (it may be easier to draw around the hand and down to the base of each finger to do this). You could enlarge the pattern on a photocopier, depending on the scale required. You can also use the template if you are following my three videos on how to make a leather glove pattern, using my template as the base and then adding your measurements on top to adjust the pattern to your size. Sometimes it is easier to draft a pattern is you have a basic shape to work from. If you are working on top of the pattern I would advise outlining the final design in a colour that does not get confused with the black lines on my template.

In theory, yes. I would always make a mock up or part of a mock up to check before making the proper glove.
