It has always been my dream to create a new apple variety! How cool would it be to grow a fruit which you can name whatever you wish and that it is it's own unique variety? The best time to plant an apple tree was 7 years ago, so I musn't continue umming and arrring about the project and just go for it! I really want you to join in, no matter how much or how little space you have. It would be incredible to have a whole new range of apple varieties by the end of the project. I want to thanks Erica, Tony and Liz for being a part of this project, and if you haven't yet then you definitely need to subscribe to them:

I planted some seeds from my favourite empire apple a few years ago and last year it had a few apples. To my surprise they were large and tasted like Granny Smith apples. This year I can see that every brunch has flower buds on. I didn’t do the fridge part. I just put them in paper towels in a tub and they sprouted within two weeks. It was worth the wait. 🙂

I am going to give this a try. I am going to set my target at 5 trees. I think I can care for that many. I believe it would be nice to leave a legacy of an apple that is unique to the land here. My husband's family has been on this very land since at least the mid-1800s. At one time, the land we are inheriting was the family apple orchard. The trees are long gone but the land will remember the apple trees.

🍎🍏You are like Luther Burbank, the famous plant breeder who experimented with potato seeds and gave us all sorts of wonderful varieties. He developed lots of well known fruit trees, too, and a cactus with no thorns. 🍎🍏🍎Johnny Appleseed is famous for growing apples from seeds all along the early settlers' trail in America. 🍏🍎 The Granny Smith apple happened by accident, in Sydney, Australia, when a certain Granny Smith tossed some apple seeds on her back lawn. The Golden Delicious, and certain other apples, were also happy accidents found and valued by observant people with good taste! 🍎😋 People who throw apple cores out of car or train windows must be the people responsible for roadside trees that spring up randomly in ditches. Roadside trees are just seedlings, and some of them have especially tasty fruit. In Australia plant breeders collect sunflowers seeds from ones sprung up along the roadside, because they are often tougher and healthier and better quality sunflower seeds than the normal ones grown on farms! 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 Early antibiotic researchers got around collecting rotten fruits from shops, and working with the new moulds they found. BTW In 1900 there were hundreds of varieties of apples. So many of those old varieties are now lost--forever... When I was a kid there were a lot more apple varieties available than there are at the supermarket today! :/ So, yes, it's wonderful what you are doing to let nature and chance--and LOVE--help wonderful new varieties spring up randomly, again, like they do in nature. 🍎😋🍏😋🍎😋🍏😋

This is awesome ! I might sneak into an apple orchard nearby and steal some apples for seeds -- I figure a nearby orchard would have a variety which is well adapted to the local climate. I'm trying to do the same with tomatoes. Two years ago I planted a lot of tomato plants and most of them got sick and died... some cherry tomato plants thrived though, they produced a lot and some tomatoes fell down on the ground. This spring I had lots of tomato seedlings sprouting like weeds. These did not get sick at all. They adapted like borg, grew like jungle, and we had so many cherry tomatoes we couldn't eat them all. I saved the seeds from the best tasting ones for 2019. I hope to end up with a cherry tomato variety which is adapted to my location.

Hello. I'd like to participate in the New Apple Variety Project. I recently collected seeds from two apple varieties that I had not seen before: Envy and Opal. I probably have between 40-50 seeds between the two varieties. This was something I was already planning to do, but now I'm even more excited having found your video on KZbin. I have a small farm in Southwest Alabama in the United States. I love fruit and nut trees. I am in the process of clearing the land bit by bit and plan to plant as many fruit and nut trees as I can. I have several grafted apple trees that I've purchased from local garden shops that do well in my area. I also have a couple of trees that aren't particularly well suited but produce good fruit hoping that with cross-pollination I might get seeds that will produce greater varieties of apple trees that will produce in the warm climate of the Southern United States.

I may have missed it, but Heterozygous is the term for why an apple seed will never be the same as the parent fruit. James Prigioni explained this well....he has some seeded trees growing too.
@bpj1805
@bpj1805 6 ай бұрын
That's certainly part of it, but homozygosity of each parent does not suffice to produce an apple of the same type as "the" parent (and there's the problem, in "the" parent - there are two!) - you'd need both the seed parent and the pollen parent to be homozygous, *and of the same variety* (which normally implies incompatibility) to produce offspring true to type.

i'm a new subscriber. I love propagating plants and so recently decided to try my hand at planting seeds from the crab apple Evereste we planted last year. As we took the seeds from the fallers on the ground i didn't go through the stratification process. I soaked them water and left them to dry overnight before planting them in a pot. i planted 6 altogether plus one or two I took in my excitement from the Braeburn apple I was eating (forgetting to refrigerate it first). So far I have 3 of them doing well and 2 just coming up. I planted 2 of them on a couple of days ago and can't wait to see how they all do. As we have a very small garden and have recently planted a fan apple (James Grieve) don't have room for more in the long term. probably keep one and give the others away. It was great watching your video. Will continue to follow and see how you are all progressing.

This year I took the seeds out of my supermarket apples and put them in my propagator on the windowsill. I had a success rate of about 1 out of 5 or 6. I potted them up and got them to about 8 inches or so and put them on my front wall with a sign saying ‘take what you need’. They all went in the end except the one I kept and transferred to a bigger pot. It did suffer some discolouration of the leaves and I don’t know if it will last the winter or not but I thought it worth a punt.

I love this project! In fact here in Northern Europe I have just found a 'local' project that is not 'identical' but has rather similar aims. So I will do my best to follow in parallel during the coming years. I have two aims, one is an apple of balanced acidity/sweetness with keeping qualities, and another that is both very sweet and 'apple-y' in taste, for making spirits and jellies. Bon Voyage! A great project.

Great idea! I have already planted 3 granny smith apple trees from seed. I just put them in compost in pots and grew them outside that way for a couple of years. Then, two years ago, I put them in the ground. They have not flowered yet. I want to grow another variety, preferably one for eating rather than baking, from seed. I only have room for 1 more tree in the ground, so I will try and get friends to "foster" any additional ones that come up. I will be using your method for these trees. That will make 5 apple trees for me, as I have a semi-dwarf Spitzenberg that had apples for the first time this year. I also have 3 other trees started from seed: 1 wild red cherry plum which is great and tastes like a Satsuma plum and 2 trees that were grown from peach seeds but became nectarine trees. Those developed a horrible case of brown rot last year and, although they were very prolific, the fruit was totally inedible. I will be spraying them with Neem oil this year to try and prevent the brown rot.

This looks fab and I'd love to join in. I'm thinking about trying about ten seeds, see how many germinate and then plant up at the allotment. Reason? Complete curiosity as to how they might turn out! Great idea!

I do have a space for an orchard. So I will be doing 2oo. I don't expect to use them all, but I have space to put some of them in some hedge rows and make a fence line too. Others I will give qway. I wonder Huw, is the idea to have the seed from the same apple or use a few varieties?

I have subscribed to those other channels. If this was a year ago, I could have shown one of the Apple trees that was producing. I cut down that tree because the apples were all very small and the tree poorly placed. I have another tree that had flowers last year, no apples yet. I have two (I might find another one or two.) More. I initially started ten and I know I have three left. Two are not growing properly and I need to find out why. Apples are genetically diverse. Even if you could insure the tree didn't cross with another veriety, it would still be unique.

I'm looking forward to see how this pans out Huw. Small question, would this work with other seedlings (Rose or pear)? Also, may I ask if you could make a video on how to make your own apple juice, cider, and perry - if you can muster it (also possibly, mead)? Great video. - Nick P.s. Have you any experience in taming back gardens?

I have seeds planted for pomegranates, Cape Gooseberries, Orka/Ladies Fingers and Golden Dwarf Papaya - I already have 5 apple trees. What I do, is take an apple with me when I go out in the car and throw the core away in a hedgerow or grass embankment while I am passing, with the hope the apple will seed itself.

I wonder if apples are grown the same way in the UK as the US. Over here grocery store apples from commercial orchards are commonly pollinized by crab apples. This means that apples grown from these seeds will most likely be very small.

My experiment with this was ten seedlings many years ago. It was from store bought apples. I don't know what variety. One of those might produce any season now. One I cut down because it was poorly placed. This time I will be using seed from an already unique apple. I have two apple trees that were grown from seed. (Not my doing) They are delicious and makes wonderful apple butter, So I was thinking of calling it "Butter breed". It was the only two apple trees in the entire cove that produced apples last growing season. So I will have second generation newfoundland apple varieties. I don't know how many, I'll just wing it. The reason? I have been ordering fruit tree seeds of fruits that I think might grow here and buying a couple trees every year. My goal is to turn 3.5 acres into a food forest. Plus, there is another location nearby that I can plant things to grow wild, just to see what survives.
