This was wonderful! I haven't spent much time doing coil work since I started with the pottery wheel, moved to handbuilding and after watching you make this video I'm going to give it a go! It's seems a lot more time intensive to handbuild a cup (but also quite meditative once someone learns as well as you ;) . Looking forward to the next installment, thanks for sharing your teaching!!!

I love the mugs without the extra coil on top and the gorgeous carved textures! Do you have a video on those ones?
@KaransPotsAndGlass3 жыл бұрын
I have a playlist of the videos which includes texturing. Here is the link to the playlist. There is one video entirely on texturing within the playlist kzbin.info/aero/PLj0pNzEmvM_r2nmjBvHwFv-7W9AYfs1LO Since you inquired about my older shorter cups, I have those videos listed below. I don't think I get around to showing the texturing in those however. These were the old videos before I remade them. Each video shows a different step of the process! 1: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIOmc4Cjn7aEgKc 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpfVnp-rdt-deNU 3: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIW9dImBrruebLM 4: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnrGZXacaLmhfZY

There is a really talented potter and teacher named Joyce Michaud who explains exactly what motions you should use to make a cup or other much larger form using pinch and coil techniques that result in a functional, well made and beautiful pot that will survive the firing process and make you proud. Give her name a search in KZbin and you will see some fantastic videos.

Thank you for the response.. I'm something of a computer Luddite and on my computer there is no arrow drop down menu or any other symbol that leads me to a video description with the links you frequently refer to. Sorry to be a bother but I so enjoy your lessons as a beginner and want to absorb all you have to offer!!!

The drop down menu is on mobile. On a desktop, scroll down under the playing video- it’s underneath.

I think that question may have been about weight? I honestly didn't measure that ball before I started, but I would guess it was about a pound or a pound and a quarter. :) . I just tell my kids to try a ball about the size of their fist... that helps them get a size they can usually still pinch! :)

You mean the second day video? kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3Kkmn6Vr8qnas0 Stuff like that is always linked in the video description. That’s under the video on a computer- or on mobile, look for the arrow drop down menu to the right of the title.

What does B mix mean if you don’t mind?
@KaransPotsAndGlass5 жыл бұрын
B-mix is just a particular blended claybody. www.lagunaclay.com/clays/western/wc401.php . I usually use Bmix with grog in my home studio. It fires a creamy whitish color. In this video I use Standard 153

Wish you added the weight of the clay you started with and the width of the walls in an actual measurement not just a varied size like a pinky or an orange.....
@KaransPotsAndGlass5 жыл бұрын
Hi Payten- you can use any size you desire. It fluxuates among each person as to how big they want to make their individual mug! The key is that you are still able to pinch your index and middle fingers to the thumb in the middle. If you can't reach all the way to the middle, I recommend a tad bit smaller. I sometimes describe it as "fist sized" for my students as well... it helps them to create a piece more fitting to their grip. Such as, a football player with big hands will have a bigger ball to pinch than the 5' little freshman girl! Maybe start with a pound ball, and see how that fits your hand. Honestly, my students have a very difficult time when I give them measurements in inches or centimeters. They just can't visualize it and things go terribly wrong... that's when I started calling it as "thick as a pinky"= TRANSLATE that to 3/8" - 1/2" in thickness! I hope that helps some! :) I think I may add this to the video description! Thanks! :)
