Creating A Rosette - Acoustic Build - Ep 6

Using scrap ovangkol and maple to create two custom designed rosettes for our first acoustic guitar builds.

Looks great Greg! I think designing and executing a nice rosette is my greatest fear when thinking about acoustic guitar building. This checked all the boxes Greg.

I'm not going to lie Dane... I put this off longer than I should have. It was WAY easier than I thought it would be. The thin CA was almost an instant bond, so I didn't have any issues with clamping and holding the pieces. Gluing up the parts in a half circle was also a great solution. I've seen Frank Haworth glue up segmented bowl sections like this a million times so I figured it would work for a rosette. The only thing I didn't do was add perfling... That will def be part of my next build.

Those turned out awesome. I like your process of cutting them out on the tablesaw. You're going to like the bracing process. It was probably me being a newbie at it, but I had a couple slide on me so just keep an eye out for that.

I had a few slivers that became "high speed projectiles" because I couldn't get them out of the way of the blade... I knew it was a risk and was positioned out of the way. I will def use the band saw on the next round of guitars!!! I'm excited about bracing the top. I think I've got the glue up sorted, but the voicing feels like it will be a big task.

very interesting and precise work man! good luck with the top tuning! I'm sure you know guitar tops are tuned to what ever key the guitar was meant to be played in mostly and/or the type of music to be played. most shoot for A440 but that has became a wider variety depending on how it's to be used. very interesting stuff!

I’m heading to class in two weeks with the dude who wrote the book on modern voicing…. It probably won’t affect these two guitars much, but it will be good for everything I do in the future… I’m hoping to get these dialed in for Eb tuning. My voice keeps losing range, so I keep tuning further down. At some point I’ll have to take up bass!! Lol
