Creating a Wooden Tank Part 1

When you create a wooden holding tank or aquarium, the method of construction that you use is going to be very important. Most people forget just how much water weighs and this fact alone can sink a wood tank.
Make sure to use horizontal ribs, not vertical ribs. Horizontal ribs will provide a structure that allows less bowing of the side of the tank than any other method I know. Also make sure to plan to have a cap of some sort. this will lock the top of the walls in place and keep them from bowing as well. make sure that the bottom is ribbed too.
You might think that having these horizontal ribs is going to make the wooden tank look bad aesthetically. Remember that this is just structure. You can always cover them up with a very nice looking wood after the tank is built and sealed with Pond Shield. There are nice looking hardwoods that can be polished into some real nice looking furniture quality pieces.

Great video! I noticed you mentioned horizontal ribbing gives you more structural support vice vertical as most plywood builds. With that being said what about a tank that is 8ft long? Do you think your advice is safe being its a far stretch for the 2x4's on the backside? Appreciate your response...

I'd like to thank you for your information I went out and bought 4 1.5 pints of blue epoxy I'm hoping to start this weekend at least get the first coat done you said in your video you used a plastic base to cover up your screws what would that be I have all my screws countersunk but have no idea what to put in it

You're welcome. You can use something as simply as wood putty or Bondo. It's just being used to fill the small void. Sand it after it sets up before applying Pond Shield. Thanks for your order!

Hi I would like to say I like your product from your video I am in the process of building a fish aquarium out of wood um it is approximately 8 feet long by 4 feet wide by 4 feet tall if you could tell me how many gallons of epoxy I would need to complete that task would be very much appreciated thank you

It really all depends on the quality of plywood you're using. I assume you'll also be fiber glassing the seams as well. With that said, you have 128 base square feet meaning if this were a perfect surface, three 1.5 quart kits would work fine. But because it is plywood and you'll be fiber glassing the seams, I would purchase either four 1.5 quart kits or one 1.5 gallon kit. That should be enough. The best way to tell if you have applied enough coating in a plywood scenario is to make sure it is at least 10mils thick when complete and that you have locked off all of the wood grain.
