The truth is there are geniuses like Tolkien who can create an entire world from scratch that is completely make-believe and quite frankly fake. It is believable and near-perfect escapism that required endless knowledge and effort to build. Civilizations, cultures, religions, characters, plots, etc. Conan built a world that was even more believable and real. And yet it is still a fantasy world. How is this possible? Because he perfectly and almost magically designed this world that was so close to our own, but in a more ancient time. I love Lord of the Rings but nothing has so fully engaged me as Conan's adventures!

@@lukebatchelor717 Exactly right. Howard brilliantly established that our own ancient history had very definite and discernible roots in the Hyborian Age, and he masterfully made all the connections in his intriguing and extremely well thought out two-part essay of the same name.

Many people have landscapes, buildings, environments (mixed with their background, interests) that inspire their train of thought, a dusty dirt road on a breezy day might make you think of the Sahara or when a river or lake gets that clear glass like sheen, you could definitely see an arm with Excalibur reaching out of it. Robert E. Howard had this daydreaming quality to his work and I'll always value that.

jelkel25 so very true! I think some of us are given to that kind of daydreaming, where one moment we're in the present and another we're in a thousands of years old past half the world away. Maybe these are pure fantasies or maybe they're wanderings of the minds trying to grasp onto vague memories from lives past.

I regularly come back to this video to recap on Howard's original thoughts, but now I'm starting to realize how a lot of the elements of the part at 4:28 have changed and evolved since he created the Conan series. For example, while the part about some Lemurians making to North America after the Great Cataclysm technically would make a lot of sense as to create the original Native Americans that actually inspired the Picts in his work. But as we know within his later works, Lemuria instead was not as large as it was here but instead were a chain of islands similar to the Pictish Isles yet further to the east along the eastern coast of Thuria, and the direct placement of this "Lemurian" continent later clearly turned into the "mysterious and nameless continent" that the enslavers of the Lemurians came from(Which we know was actually Mu) before they settled on the eastern coast of Thuria. Or even the fact that in the Hyborian Age essay, he states that the Picts had a colony among some Valusian mountain range given they were often employed by and traded with Valusia during the Thurian Age, and thus is the reason why we have the Picts during the Hyborian Age, unlike what is stated here where the Picts made their way to South American then to Atlantis and later to Europe. Although, it does make a lot of sense that Picts would move to South America and later interbreed with refugees from this long lost continent in the Pacific that replaced the former Lemurian continent here, which we know were the Naacal people that would go on to form the Mesoamerican cultures of the South and Central Americas later on, as stated by some of the mythology Howard was inspired by. However, another thing that ended up happening deep in the lore of Conan, is that the same "short and stout" Picts of the Hyboria had clearly interbred with some Neanderthals already in Hyboria sometime after the Great Cataclysm, given the similarities between the two races, and how the Picts were typically de"pict"ed during the Kull stories for the most part with some differences.

Howard, a very fascinating artist, one cannot help but draw inspiration from both him and his sources! I think I am going for the Sword Sorcery setting, but Instead of looking back, I focus potential futures. Theme: history repeats itself, cyclical etc.

Wow, great paper. Could Edgar Cayce have influenced Howard about Atlantis as he seemed to, in part, about reincarnation? I do believe in these early races of mankind such as Picts,Atlanteans,Lemurians,and so forth.And at one time,before recorded time,there were many continents and islands before the great deluge of Noah's era which had sunk under the ocean waves.Plato wrote of the existence of Atlantis and Egypt had trade and commerce with each other

I think Howard put more of himself into this pre-history than you give him credit for. Also, more of this pre-history is mentioned in "Isle of the Eons" which I don't believe you covered. My theory is that the peaks of both the Rockies and the Andes formed the original Pictish Isles ... also Howard twice mentioned that the modern day Basques were descendants of the Picts (I believe you left this out).

At the 21:30 minute mark, you show REH's timeline for various protagonists, with Kull at 100,000 B.C. and Solomon Kane at 1580 A.D., etc. I've never seen this before, and I'm wondering if REH might also have specified when Conan had his adventures -- which were obviously after Kull yet prior to all the other names on the list. Probably from when MARVEL did their Conan comic back in the '70s, the impression I got was that Conan flourished sometime in the 11th Millennium B.C., around 10,500 B.C. or so. Was there more to this official typewritten REH chronology as it pertains to the Hyborean Age?

I believe Robert read the the book PRE-ADAMITE MAN by the author Paschal Beverly Randolph. This book would have given much inspiration and historical reference to the Conan stories. If anyone has proof of my theory I would appreciate input.
