Thank you. It's always good to see the reference thru the whole procedure as it is a tremendous help watching all the value placements.

🙏Chelsea sooo much. I am a retired make up artist learning how to paint. I am so excited to start these two Sargent exercises I cannot tell you. You are an amazing teacher. I am learning how “not to blend” from years of make up from you. I cannot thank you enough. 🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋Stephanie from Spain

Didn’t Sargent paint with the subject by the easel, walking back a distance, studying, then walking forward to apply a stroke before returning to observe from a distance? I read that he prepared the eye socket before “dropping in the eye like a poached egg on a plate”, rather than just going to them.
@timowthie2 жыл бұрын
he did. people have said he could achieve a likeness before putting in the features.

@@aspenisthebest like he could achieve a likeness just by the face shape and color and plane shifts with the features indicated with smudges.

Very beautiful painting, Chelsea. It looks to me as though you are accomplishing your goals. If it was easy, then everybody could and would be doing it, wouldn’t they? Chasing the mirage is part of the hook, at least for me. Thank you for another lovely video.
@cynthiamarston22082 жыл бұрын
The good part of your posts is the fact you have your own style and way to find the portrait beautifully. Its important to copy masters too but then again not really. I think when an artist finds a portrait in their own style that satisfies them it doesnt matter how you or others do it. So if you want a Masters’ style then fine. What is professional level exactly? I think its when a portrait is very good. A lot can be learned from copy work. Id say be careful. Do what your abilities call you to do so the painting doesnt get messed up and blossom from there where your own style evolves.

Hi, thanks for this. In terms of medium: For the first layer of colour could you just add turps? Then for the second and maybe final layer could you just use a medium of two parts refined linseed oil, one part mineral spirits, just added to be able to get enough detail and fine-ness of stroke when required - would it be good to just use a bit of such a mixture to obtain this ‘mayonnaise’ like quality as a general rule for the top layers?
@hotpocketmaster69262 ай бұрын
What colors did you use for those light and dark shadows? I’m working on learning color mixing and color theory and I’m struggling with mixing shadows. :)
@ChelseaLang2 ай бұрын
It depends on where you're looking at in the painting, but my shadows are predominantly Transparent Oxide Brown, or maybe Transparent Oxide Red, typically muted with a bit of Viridian or Ultramarine. But, what I find more helpful than paint recipes is to actually do an exercise like these! I recommend these to my students all the time, and it really speeds up the process of learning color mixing. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/a2jNc5WBmt2JeNk&pp=gAQBiAQB
