Compost is the be-all and end-all of growing your own fruit and vegetables on the homestead. Without a steady supply of nutritious, home made compost, growing your own food on a homestead just wouldn't be possible. See how I get this right using the autumn/fall season's fallen leaves.

Autumn, or fall, depending on where in the world you are, is one of the most beautiful times of the year. The landscape takes on massive change as the leaves on trees start to change colour, fall to the floor and it starts to get colder and darker. This is the perfect time for gardeners and homesteaders to wonder the streets of their local communities, or their own properties, to pick up as many fallen leaves to make compost. Most of the time, or in fact, almost all of the time, people in suburbs or communities rake up fallen leaves and put them into plastic bags for the municipal services to take them away. This create unnecessary pressure on the waste system. Taking as many bags of fallen leaves as you can to create your own leaf mold compost is not only giving you incredibly good quality compost, it is also removing all this organic matter from dumps, which may reduce the amount of harmful gasses that are being produced.
Great tips for creating great compost on your homestead
- Collect the fallen leaves from as wide a variety of trees as possible. This improves the nutrient and structural makeup of the final compost
- Stick to the 2-to-1 ratio of carbon to nitrogen when making your compost pile. Carbon-rich materials, like fallen leaves, need nitrogen to feed the soil organisms that break down the organic matter. If you don't have enough nitrogen your compost pile will take longer to break down, but it will still break down over time
- Ensure there is enough ventilation and aeration for your compost pile. For this reason I am using chicken wire as it provides ample airflow
- Regularly turn your compost pile to properly aerate the centre of the pile and evenly distribute all the microbial and soil actively throughout the compost pile
- Ensure there is enough moisture and water your compost pile regularly

Do you create your own compost from scratch? What is your best mix and do you also use autumn/fall fallen leaves in your compost pile? I would love to hear from you 🌻

So good to see!!! My son pruned our Rhus Pendulina yesterday as it was starting to cast shade on the solar panels. My grandson and I spent hours shredding the small to medium branches and we cut up the thicker wood for the fire. We layered shreddings with horse manure from a dear friend's stable and our third compost heap is now almost half full! We never send any garden matter off our property and never have buy compost or firewood. It's a win win!

Oh wow, it sounds like you and the family have been busy and very productive! It's so great to hear how you can do these with your generations of kids and that they get to learn and understand all the benefits that the natural world has to offer. As you say, it's a win-win with the massive added bonus of great quality, clean co lost for your garden and vegetables 🌻

We have been doing our own composting for years. We add leaves, lawn clippings, veggie and fruit peels and shrub cuttings, which my husband cuts into small pieces. We also added wriggler worms which breakdown the compost in next to no time. We have three big bins and each one produces "black gold" every few months which go straight into the garden. Our plants and veggies thrive on this compost. We also give away worms and worm tea to encourage folk to produce their own compost. It is so rewarding producing healthy organic veggies! Happy gardening to you and your family!
