Hello Mike, I just want to say how much I really appreciate your tutorials! I've been missing my classes for 3 weeks now (I have a weekly appointment scheduled Thursdays which is when my 3D modelling classes are), so I'm a bit behind for the class. Watching your tutorials have helped me a lot! Very easy to follow & even your techniques on older videos with older versions of Maya still holds up. Thank you!

Good tutorial, helped a bit but still dealing with a specific problem. Hope you can help. Just started using Maya 2018 from 2016 and I miss Mental Ray. But Arnold seems to have the work around needed for what I want to do which is make a nice looking glass material. Here's the rub, I make 3D models meant to look like neon signs. In the past for the glass portion I'd use mia material x's glass preset and then layer it in post over a paint fx neon glow. This was great because you'd have a nice dark slightly transparent shape that when layered over the glow would look like the glass of a sign. However in Arnold when I try to render a glass object on it's own to layer in post I just get a solid object with no translucency. I think this is related to Arnold's light system, particularly the skydome. If I use an image file instead of a flat color in the skydome light I can see the image through the object, but if I use a straight color all I get is a solid color where my glass was supposed to be. Not really sure what to do, hope this isn't to confusing...

Hi Mike, thanks for the great tuts! You will have a subscriber for life if you would show me/us how to remove the Maya zoom mouse wheel slow down that happens about midway through the mouse wheel zoom process. I do know about the "F" key for focus and the alt right drag - but I can not find anywhere that actually shows how to remove that annoying feature without always having to stop using the mouse wheel or just keep spinning the wheel over and over until it gets past the slow down. Thanks buddy!
@MHTutorials3D7 жыл бұрын
I have never seen that happen but I guess the problem is in the mouse setting ( not in Maya ) Try and configure your mouse in the mouse software
@roberthollis90617 жыл бұрын
Ok Mike thanks for the reply. Oh well - it can not be a mouse issue since once the slow down is reached it stays that way for panning or any movement until I push through it. I will keep looking. Thanks anyhoo.

A question, if I add all these elements shown in the video including some own meshes and textures, like a house with a door and walls, and say that I'd rather make an animated video rather than digital art, is it possible to render it at all at home? For 20 seconds of material, what would you do to make it as good looking as possible but at the same as little time to render as possible. Last time I did something similar in Blender it took two days straight of rendering, but this looks way heavier in comparison.
@MHTutorials3D7 жыл бұрын
20 seconds of animation is 20 times 24 frames ( at least ) , so 480 frames times maybe 10 minutes each equals 4800 minutes or 80 hours. And this is on average. Another option is to use a render service like RebusFarm. You batch render via their website and they basically have 5000 computers so it would be far less than an hour.
@sebbef7 жыл бұрын
Mike Hermes That's insanely good, I think that I'll have to go that way, would you cram up everything to the best and slowest quality before sending?
@MHTutorials3D7 жыл бұрын
It really would not be that expensive, certainly not for a 20sec clip. I would go with the best quality possible. Her is their website nl.rebusfarm.net/en/?gclid=Cj0KCQiAzMDTBRDDARIsABX4AWxIZ8grTviEF_ESsd61siB2cngOY3g4dQk_Qcxq_JYW_RZHD5lVce4aAoXgEALw_wcB

Hi Mike... Thank you so much for all the amazing tutorials!! You have helped me get through school so far.. Some teachers dont teach so well so I have to resort to KZbin. So I know this video is from last year and this is alittle late, but have one request for Arnold... I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on "Arnold Rendering." Soo.... I have noticed when you render an animation you can either do a "batch render" or "render sequence." If you do "render sequence" youre kinda stuck waiting until its done rendering before you can use maya again but the renders come out amazing. If you do a "batch render" I believe you can continue to work in maya but.. The final renders leave an "Arnold" water mark on most if not all rendered images. Is there a way to "batch render" without having that watermark? Or should I just continue to use render sequence? It would be amazing if you could show how to do this or just a basic "Arnold Rendering" tutorial since there arent very many tutorials on Arnold rendering and as you know its far superior to maya software rendering.. Also they have yet to really teach Arnold rending and I go to one of the top art schools in the entire country. Thank you so much again for all your hard work!!!

Arnold Request: I was modeling a planet, but couldn't figure out how to create the upper atmosphere in a way that faded out into space. What I did, was create a sphere for the planet's atmosphere that was translucent, so you could see water and land underneath, but the edges of the sphere are crisp and have a hard boundary. It was more like a translucent bubble around my planet than an atmosphere that dissipates the further away you get from the earth's surface. I never could figure out what sort of material to use for a thin atmosphere around my spherical planet.
I really enjoy your tutorials, your teaching method is Epic, easy to understand especially for beginners like me ).
