Highlighting the need for the UK to reclaim its sense of local identity through the vernacular, Clare Nash undertook research into vernacular technologies and how these can be applied to sustainable modern day housing. This formed a masters dissertation and later, with additional UK and European case studies, a book called 'Contemporary Vernacular Design: How British Housing Can Rediscover its Soul'.
In the is webinar Clare draws upon the 25 inspirational housing schemes featured in her book to demonstrate there is hope for the future of home building in Britain. The case studies are not just examples of good design, but also demonstrate the achievable nature of contemporary vernacular in today's society. Generating a sense of place, community and regional identity, these schemes are also affordable and highly energy efficient. Claire will share how the schemes were delivered, how they have been received by the community, and how passive principles of vernacular design were applied to create true sustainability.
Clare runs Clare Nash Architecture, a practice specialising in eco-homes and barn conversions since 2011. Clare is a RIBA Role Model, an author, a former architectural technology tutor and examiner, and a current architectural business lecturer at Oxford Brookes University.
