Here is the method to create Measuring Points in 2 Point Perspective. Not often shown, this is the secret of accurate Perspective Drawing and the method I use here can be used to make your artwork more understanding to your viewers. See Video 2 for the complete course in Measuring Points. At Best Get Help (bestgethelp.com) I show you just how.

Hi Val, thanks for your videos. Great to see someone who cares about their skills. I was wondering about the Station point on the vertical axis. How did you arrive at that position? I wasn't quite clear, being 4 times what size, to end up "8" down from the ground line; how did you determine those? I tend to start with drawing the plan view of the piece of furniture first, which dictates the sizes, so this is an interesting alternative.

Great course! But I'm thinking vice verso: is it possible to measure the ratio (width/height) of a perspective screen from a photo image? I guess NOT. Because we are lacking of information to do that. A screen is a flat object, we can get only one vertical surface from it. That means we can get only one vanish point. We also don't know the distance between the camera and the object. So I guess there is no way to measure the ratio of the screen (or a black board, a panel on wall etc). Am I wrong?

hi, i don't speak english very well, i'm trying to read doctor brook taylor's book, but the book is in english, can you make a video explaining how he finds mp (measuring points) using plans and perspective (for two points escape). I already knew how to find the MPs, using the circles as shown in your video above, I would just like an explanation using the perpendicular plans. thank you.

I do have an idea of how it works but I do not use this method as it seems a long way round to get to the point.

"arc tool", you mean a compass! If using computer, the circle tool.

Great video. I have a question.. Is the measuring line at the bottom of your frame/page? And, can there be any objects or ground space below the measuring line that can be seen in the picture? Hope that isn't confusing. Thank you so much. Thumbs up.

The measuring line is always on the ground line, you always measure from the ground line.

I'm a little unclear as to how you worked out the station point. You say: "To get us standing in the right position, if a box is 2 by 4, we can easily 4 times that amount" And then you drag the station point down 8 units?
@LearnPerspective

Hi Steve - First you have to understand I have recently revamp my old website and I am teaching Perspective Drawing online. That means I have already explained how to calculate the position where you are standing, the Station Point. But to your point. Everything we create as artists/illustrators it is always important where we view that subject. Too close causes distortion, too far, well you cannot go too far, but you could loose detail. So if we call each unit ‘1-foot’, we can easily, use the 2-feet side and times it by 4 giving you an 8-feet distance to create your subject. So if you think about a box 2 x 4 it would seem OK to stand approx 8-feet away. If the subject was a ‘match box’, then 2 feet would be also OK. I do explain how to find your ‘Station Point’ in the course I offer, but it takes a little more explaining. One of the important part of Perspective is also the part most artist refuse to learn, the technical part, but once you have learned it, you will know just how far to be away from your subject, you need not use the technical stuff any more unless it’s for technical drawing. Check out my gallery (learnartonline.co.uk/submit-image-gallery/) and you will see distortion and how we deal with it.

Hi Val Thanks for your reply. Cool, good stuff. What is your website, as it's unclear how to calculate the station point from this vid. Cheers.

how do you know how big to make the arch?
@LearnPerspective
@LearnPerspective 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Shmo - The centre of each arch starts at the vanishing points and the station point (where you are standing). Where it crosses the Horizon Line that is the point for your Measuring Point. I had finished a long day and someone wanted me to show them the process, so I went about it at 3am so sorry about the speed. Sun Chen, yes, you are wrong. Gordon Bruce, you are working the CAD way, plan then 3D, too slow. The process of using perspective speeds-up that whole process. Once you have produce your Measuring Grid you can use it over and over if you are using the same view. Perspective drawing is fast and the most accurate drawing there is. Once you have mastered the rules of perspective you won’t need to do the theory each time, your brain and your eye will work together to create amazing artwork. The big problem with having the skills of perspective, I have over 45 years, you become aware of everyone’s artwork and have to learn not to be critical of others work. From the moment we wake up in the morning and open our eyes, we ALL use perspective! P.S. Never knew all this time you guys were looking at my stuff, thanks.

You start with the center on a Vanishing Point and run it through the Station Point at the bottom. Where it intersects the Horizon line is where your Diagonal Measuring Point will be. Also, the DMP of the right Vanishing point always lands on the left side of the Stand Point and vice versa.
