@@Grandwigg Shouldn't be too much of a hassle, that is why Leather is either wettened like Tyranth did do, or Submerged in Water to let it be soaked for periods of time. Then there's Boiling Leather, and Salt Water Brines, course that's more for Clothing, Holsters, Sheaths, and Leather Armor.

I really think Tyranth should look into learning to smith. He clearly has an aptitude for making things. Im sure he'd take to it quite well. Imagine being able to do builds from scratch. Though I understand that it might have a price barrier for him as no doubt getting lessons and setting up even a small forge is not cheap at all.

Instead of having the guard and pommel milled, look into having them printed out of metal instead. Since it would be a single process and no material is wasted, it will likely be cheaper. You are more than capable of cleaning it up to get all the lines crisp and to the desired finish. There are a good amount of places that you can send them the files and they will make it and ship it to you. They are surprisingly affordable and do a good job.

V1 looks the most comfortable. Make sure when you weld the allthread that after you are done you heat up and thermalcycle the end of the tang around where the weld is. The high heat from the weld will make that spot brittle and prone to snapping, air cooling thermal cycle will help restructure the steel. You did a great job you should learn bladesmithing.

V1. Adding ones personal touches on a weapon is interesting. I'd been given a cold steel master tanto some years ago by my uncle when I gifted him a knife. The rubber kraton material supposed to never rot started disintegrating over time. I took the guts out of para cord and removed the strands inside and just used the sheath of it to bind and wrap the hilt til it blended like it was made for it. Functional with character. I look forward to seeing updates on this sword.

I liked the first handle design better. And I said in a reply to the pinned comment, I wonder what a diamond pattern would need to make on a cord wrap instead of the v2 pattern. I can only imagine what it would be like with titanium. (But he can't have the titanium currently holding my some in place.) I'm still impressed and in awe of the fight for the crown video on Screen Tested and Shadiversity. I hope Tyranth gets more opportunities to do more of that (and sword improvements like this I've as well)

The reason for the handle being loose but the screws being tight is because they didn't counter sink the screws properly, so they do the opposite of the intention. It's the same thing that can happen with the tsuka on cheap katana that have two mekugi or double pegged. It is easier to have a tight tsuka with a single mekugi but that tends to require a properly friction fit tsuka. When you counter sink the second mekugi ana wrong you unbalance the "equal load" between the two mekugi, and so they actually fight each other, making your tsuka loose. Same thing with your screws.

Very nice work! I definitely like the "V1" grip more than the "V2" you showed. I actually have a question for you, if you don't mind. Have you ever tested or worked with the CAS Hanwei "Celtic sword"? It's one of Hanwei's older ones, and it's still available. Just checked on Kult of Athena, and they still have it. I bought one over a decade ago, and it's always one I've wanted to turn into a project sword myself. I'm not satisfied with its grip at all and want to make my own, plus a new guard and pommel. If you haven't worked with it, is there any chance you could get your hands on one and see what you think of it and maybe make some recommendations for a project like this and what you'd change?

If you have an angle grinder, files and some time, the pommel is doable by yourself. Same for the guard but it would probably be a lot harder to get it nice. Tho you could go from a straight piece and heat it in coal to bend it how you want, it's not too hard. Only thing you'd want to pay for is the threading of the pommel, because that's usualy where things go wrong without good equipment.
