I can not wait for this to be up and running!! Johann is a master. If he doesn't have a youtube channel, where he shows off such skill, please-please include him doing more glassblowing within your channel (yes, I also like when you do your own glass-work too). Glass-blowing in general is fascinating. Glass-blowing for lab-ware is next level! You are very lucky to know Johann! All the best of luck with this awesome project. May the fountain when working be as spectacular and engaging as this video was to watch!

As a child, there used to be this very boring shopping mall that my parents went to. One day a glass blower setup shop. They would leave me there for hours watching them make these huge glass reproductions of wooden sailing ships. The sails were made from gossamer thin pieces from a blown bubble.

I've managed to make a (very sloppy) Jesus seal in the past, but the part that straight up blows my mind is the glass-to-metal seals. You just have to have an incredibly precise intuitive understanding of both the glass you're working with and the metal. Again, kudos to Johann for this utter virtuosity.

That is some beautiful glassblowing indeed. Please be careful when filling it, I worked in a lab once where 2 people died in a NaK explosion. Now they use Galinstan instead, would that work for your fountain too?
@AdvancedTinkering Жыл бұрын
I will! I have at least some experience from filling my first version. I'm still thinking about the best way to fill it with clean NaK. I don't think Galinstan would work. At least not as good. With a density several times that of NaK I don't think it would make a good fountain. Or I would have to use way more power. But if I get my hands on some, I will try it.
@Nick-ed4uh Жыл бұрын
@@AdvancedTinkering I actually have a bit over a kilo of Galinstan in a bottle. I don't have any real use for it other than being cool to have, but it doesn't get more cool than a liquid metal fountain. I'm from the Netherlands so I could perhaps send it to you. I'll send you an email we can discuss something.
@flomojo2u Жыл бұрын
I've made it before and it was very easy since the temperatures involved were quite low and I just used a heat gun. The ratios are non-critical and unless you have to have it perform at lower temperatures it's very easy to make without much but the most basic measurements. Of course it requires indium which isn't cheap, and neither is gallium, so that would be the hardest part. It does tend to wet glass due to low surface tension, so aside from the price that might make it unfeasible. It's also messy and will smear all over the place, especially on your hands.

It would be interesting to add a lab condenser in the long angled return section, so that you can chill the metal for continuous operation :)
@AdvancedTinkering Жыл бұрын
Oh, that's a great idea! I still hope the larger volume of the fountain and the increased surface area is sufficient to cool the metal enough to enable continuous operation. If not, that might be a good solution. But on the other hand, I wouldn't know where to put that fountain for continuous operation :D It is an accident waiting to happen.

Does tungsten need any pretreatment to allow for the adhesion to the glass?? To some degree, one of my largest issues when attempting to design a tube for high voltage was contemplating how I could get a connection inside the glass vessel such as you have shown! If tungsten is all that is required I’m basically swimming in it being a welder by day 🤪
@noodlelynoodle. Жыл бұрын
A different comment I saw said it needs a good oxide layer on the tungsten cause the glass wants to stick to tungsten oxide more than just raw tungsten metal

It is perfectly normal for glassblowers to work without gloves. Due to the poor thermal conductivity of glass, this is possible. Gloves would take away too much sensitivity in the fingers and are therefore used only in rare cases.
