We’re really excited to launch our new format for osmose: the “Creative Tutorials” series!
In this first episode, pro film scorer Josh Madoff will show you 7 essential osmose tips aimed at kickstarting inspiration, no matter what your keyboard background is. Beginners and pros are welcome alike!
Thing #1 Osmose sensitivity: did you know how sensitive Osmose is? It reacts to the slightest touch, allowing you to modulate the sound in a precise yet highly expressive way.
Thing #2 Aftertouch and gestures: press harder on a key to make it sound deeper. Each preset will react differently to aftertouch, and that’s what makes this feature so special: it offers a true expressive experience. Just like every Osmose’s gestures, it’s completely independent per key.
Thing #3 Pitch-bend: get an acoustic-like sound by adding a very delicate vibrato with pitch-bend. Just wiggle your key and adjust the modulation to bend your notes!
Thing #4 MPE Arpeggiator: this unique feature offers a new way of using arpeggiator, tracking each note you’re playing individually. You can then bend or wiggle each key, use the aftertouch or set the tempo internally.
Thing #5 Pressure Glide: set a minimal interval and everything in that interval will glide seamlessly between two notes based on relative pressure. You can even get multiple glides at the same time!
Thing #6 The internal synth engine: within each preset, there’s seven macros you can use to easily change and shape the sound. Every sound is very flexible, so that you can distort them in every way you need.
Thing #7 Pedals: Osmose’s way of handling pedals is very unique. Get 0 to 127 dynamic control with your foot, without blocking the keyboard, and play around a second chord sequence while playing freely with your two hands.

There are levels to this shit, folks. Josh is a ninja! The pedals running sostenuto is huge, and this was also the best explanation ive seen of the gestural controls and the intervals/bending concept! Exceptional piece of content!

This is excellent and manages to explore many aspects of the Osmose that dont really show up in a lot of the videos that came out since its launch. I've owned one since launch but this video managed to make me excited about it all over again. Especially since I like to use it as a MPE controller with other synths, and things like the pressure glide and arpeggiator are coming to the MPE MIDI output in the next firmware version.

So happy to read that! We noted that idea about a MIDI controller video ;) And yes, we've started to rebalance educational videos vs marketing videos to offer you more resources to be inspired by your Osmose. And don't forget our e tips videos as well, they might be 1min long but you can still learn a lot from it: instagram.com/p/C84V1WstCXQ/

I always thought they would have moreso knocked the expressiveness out of the park if they added touch receptors where if you slide finger up the key, it does some sort of effect or modulation. Still pretty sweet though.

This really goes to our heart! A lot of work and love was put into that video, as we're not that many in the marketing/product department. Bravo to Josh, who made that demo right after 4 days of trade show at NAMM. He nailed it. We created that series to give practical tips for people to use expressiveness in all contexts: to us MPE is not a gimmick but an incredible medium for any musician to express themselves more easily! Shoot your ideas for Creative Tutorials to come, we're listening!

Wonderful capture of "art" (form meets function) Thank you. Please describe how you connect the Korg Kontol 2 to the Osmose. I see the MIDI cable coming out of the Osmose however the Korg Kontrol has a small USB input. Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I use a Doremidi UMH-10 to convert the USB midi from the Nanokontrol2 to 5-pin din (it aslo powers the nanokontrol2). However, if your midi controller has power of its own, you can just plug it directly into the Osmose (via the USB or the Midi DIN in). I prefer to leave the USB jack available for connecting with my DAW.

This is amazing! Imho It would be helpful for tutorial videos like this to share the settings and patches chosen as there are a lot of sound design options which can change tonality and response. This effects the playing dynamics a lot as he discusses during the demo. Learning from copying sounds can be helpful to finding things that work, as the Osmose can get very abstract and out there. Thank you for putting this together. 🙏🙌

@JOSHMADOFF
@JOSHMADOFF 18 күн бұрын
@nashatkins8883 I was using a bit of the Eventide pedal in additon to the internal fx engine. Film composers tend to use multiple stages of reverb to add a little extra depth :)

How do you hold two chord with sustinuto, & play at the same time? Don’t the new notes get locked into the sustaining too?
@JOSHMADOFF
@JOSHMADOFF 17 күн бұрын
With MPE, each new note opens a new midi channel. This allows the Osmsoe to recognize which notes are being held by sostenuto, leaving the rest of the keyboard free to play on the remaining channels (without getting grabbed up by the sustain).

@@JOSHMADOFF thanks a lot for your answer ! So UBS B to Micro USB... ? never seen that kind of cable but it's a good tip to know :-)
@JOSHMADOFF
@JOSHMADOFF 20 күн бұрын
@johnjohnpetterson8428 that cable would work, however, the Osmose won't power the NanoKontrol2, so you would be better off sending it into something that both powers it and gives you either Midi DIN or USB midi out. Doremidi makes another box called the DUH-10 that does the same thing for usb midi

Is Josh running the Osmose through the Eventide Space? If so, how much reverb is being applied to each of these patches?
@JOSHMADOFF
@JOSHMADOFF 21 күн бұрын
In general, not too much reverb. Some of what you're hearing is the room sound. However, adding a second reverb (in addition to the internal fx engine) is a great way to add an extra dimension to the sound. In film scoring, we tend to use multiple reverbs for most things.
@davesterling5106

@@JOSHMADOFF thanks for the quick reply! I'm a big fan of the Space. Great pedal. The video was awesome and I learned a bunch. Do you suggest turning up the sensitivity like you did at the beginning for most cases?
@JOSHMADOFF
@JOSHMADOFF 21 күн бұрын
@davesterling5106 Thanks! In many cases, I turn the pressure sensitivity up all the way as it opens up things that are only possible with that setting, but it's also true the other way around (for example playing super percussively with low sensitivity). In general, I like to think of the sensitivity and pitch bend settings as sources of sound design/synthesis rather than a set calibration.
