UPDATED TUTORIAL HERE: • Mix Colors Like A Pro ...
Color powder is color is made from bloomed liquid dye & a base powder. Dye is very concentrated & must be bloomed first (dissolved in water); you can NOT use it as it comes. Add 1/2 teaspoon of dye, 30 milliliters of hot water, & 1/2 cup of base (corn starch or baking soda). I use corn starch because it creates a smoother color powder. You can leave the dye in a liquid form OR you can dry it on a base powder. To bloom a lot of dye, add hot water & dye in a cup. Stir it well. Make sure it's fully bloomed. **Always test it beforehand. ***MAKE A VERY SMALL BATCH OF COLOR POWDER FIRST! Then test that batch in a bath bomb to see if it works BEFORE making a large batch. Add your base powder (baking soda or corn starch) & liquid colorant (food coloring or bloomed dye) to a bowl & mix it thoroughly. Dry the powder. It will forms small chunks. Break them up or blend the powder for quicker drying. I do not recommend baking the powder. ** If you burn it, it's useless. It gets rock hard just like burnt bread. PROCESSING: Squeeze powder. If it doesn’t stick together, it's ready to be processed. To process, blend a small amount for about 2 minutes on high. Allow it to cool. If the powder clumps together immediately, it's not dry enough yet. But the powder will eventually stick to the bottom of blender due to all the friction & steam (even if it was dry enough). The powder will be a bit damp from the steam, so allow the powder to dry & cool before packaging to avoid mold & mildew. I use charcoal for black. ***This project doesn’t require a lot of effort, just a lot of patience as the main thing you're doing is waiting for the powder to become dry enough so you can either process it or color it more. Everything (including you) will be covered in color powder so, make large batches of the 3 main colors. If you have light colors & need to use a lot, adjust the recipe to keep wet & dry ratios balanced. For instance, if you used baking soda as the base, replace the amount of baking soda with the amount of color powder. EXAMPLE: 1 cup baking soda, minus 2 tablespoons. (Replace 2 tablespoons with color powder).
*** You can still use food coloring if you want. I did this time, too. Several clips feature the liquid food colorant. But I burnt it ALL! You can imagine weeks of work (not to mention all the money!) going down the drain within 30 minutes was very disheartening & discouraging to say the least. But it forced me to take a closer look at lakes & dyes. And the truth is that dyes are better, quicker, cheaper, & much more concentrated. I'd probably be still using food color if it wasn't for burning all of my color powder! So... Silver lining! You can purchase regular red, but I recommend purchasing red 27 & 28 (pink) instead. They are much brighter, prettier, & make the other colors just as good. Plus, it makes pink (red can't) & the colors made with pink (purple, fuchsia, magenta) are much prettier than if made with red!
UPDATE: * Even though I did this here, I do NOT recommend coating the color powder more than once. Coat the base powder with color one time only. The more you coat the base powder, the bolder/darker your colors will become, but it will also get less bright & more dull with each coat*
