She's fun! I've never made a jacket out of old jeans, but I have made two handbags(using the fly zip from two pairs, to meet in the middle with the button and button hole from the waistband made one virtually pickpocket-proof), spliced two pairs together into one, and covered the seat of a chair from them. I really must get on with using up more of my denim stash!

What make of a sewing machine would you recommend for denim?

A regular sewing machine works for denim and thin leather. You will need denim and leather needles though along with the appropriate topstitch thread. All are available online or in a fabric store.

Ideally metal-bodied, as they have stronger motors. So either an old one or a specifically heavy duty one.
