The starfish is a type of biomechanical starship. In the bad ending it would envelop Earth and destroy all life on it but apparently it can also 'terraform' planets to match the environmental needs of its controller. The player boards the ship after being drawn into a wormhole after destroying an alien communication station on one of Saturn's moons.

It could be more accurate to say that Bowser sounds like this thing, considering this game came out before Bowser sounded like he does now.

@linxnewman Why not? Having an alien organic life form spaceship to transform Mars to a habitable planet to live in is the best ending ever.
