Creatures is an artificial life (alife) simulator series, created in the 90's by English computer scientist Steve Grand whilst working for the Cambridge video games developer Millennium Interactive. The first game in the series was released for Windows 3.1 in 1996.
Gameplay focuses on raising alien creatures known as Norns, teaching them to survive, helping them explore their world, defending them against other species, and breeding them. Words can be taught to creatures by a learning computer (for verbs) or by repeating the name of the object while the creature is looking at it. After a creature understands language, the player can instruct their creature by typing in instructions, which the creature may choose to obey. A complete life cycle is modelled for the creatures - childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and senescence, each with their own particular needs. The gameplay is designed to foster an emotional bond between the player and their creatures. Rather than taking a scripted approach, Creatures series games were driven by detailed biological and neurological simulation and their unexpected results.
Creatures is a biological simulation. You start with six eggs of Norns, cute little creatures who live in an imaginary world. Your task is to give them knowledge about the world they live in, learn them how to speak, how to use toys, an elevator, how to eat etc. They will eventually grow older, reproduce themselves and die. The game uses its own genetics system, as well as biochemical and neurological calculations to determine the evolution of Norns and the way their DNA would develop in their descendants.
Gameplay video of the first Creatures game from 1996. There were six major Creatures releases from Creature Labs.
This game (combined with Creatures 2) was later re-released in 2004 as "Creatures : The Albian Years".
You guys still remember the original creatures from 1996? Let that nostalgia kick in ;)

Honestly this game was so ahead of its time. Just the graphics and the sound design alone are incredible, and not to mention this is technically one of the first accessible AIs (you could teach the creatures a database of words and make them associate words with different things). They had a full-on simulation of their organisms and genetics, with different environment factors impacting it. This game is pure genius

I remember playing this, as well as the two sequels. I think this game alone was responsible for planting the idea in my head that games can be more than shooters or rpgs or puzzlegames. Games can be without a "win" state. Games can be weird. And it fired my love for indiegames. I still find this game fascinating. Also I distinclty remember there being a bug in the original version of this game that made pressing a button release happyness hormones, which lead to norns getting addicted to using elevators almost to starvation. Boy did they get high. :D

My version of the game came with a stuffed Creature. Kind of like a Beanie Baby as those were the craze around the mid to late 90s. Anyone know which version this was? I want to say the intro with the developer had a blue spider... but that might have been Zoo Tycoon or Roller Coaster Tycoon.

I never knew (or maybe forgot) C1 ran on Windows 3.1 - it seems ridiculously advanced for pre-95 Windows!
@ArneChristianRosenfeldt
@ArneChristianRosenfeldt 3 ай бұрын
Does it need 32bit extensions? It seems to be 2d. Now I think that the windows driver could not deal with transparency? You load a png with your own code and have to translate into bmp. But I think that RGBA was supported. So this game needs a modern graphics card despite the old OS.

does this work with the Albian years collection that comes with C1 because I have been trying to do this for a while on the 95, but it didn't work because I directly copied the main creatures file and when the game runs I get an error that says that the server execution failed; now note that I am doing this through a dos emulator. I am also wondering if you managed to do this with windows 3.1 through dos and the reason being is because i have DOSBox on my ios and it would be awesome to get this to work!!!
