In my area of the country (and may be all) there is a state certification sticker that is placed over the card reader to prevent scammers from installing their "own" card reader. If you ever see that certification sticker broken there is a good chance that the gas pump has been tampered with. Report it to the owners and find another pump.

Here in Austin, it seems you can't find a station without all or most of the pumps with tampered labels. You have to report it to the Dept. of Agriculture (which regulates and monitors meters and scales here in Texas) because more often than not, the store clerk or manager could care less.

Another thing everyone should DEFINITELY do is this. I have set up for my cards that ANY AND EVERY purchase that is made on that account will send me a text message. It sounds annoying, but it's not really and it's well worth it. At most places, when a purchase is made, it will instantly text me WITHIN SECONDS, that I have a purchase pending, and then it will text me when it's "posted" or as I assume that to mean, confirmed, probably by the bank I'm guessing. I also have text messages set up for nearly everything else that happens with my account. I use 2FA for my login info, I get texts for a deposit, for a balance under a certain amount, so on. I avoid using the online banking stuff but this is for security and it's worth it. Now, there isn't an intended option for this, but I decided to use the "text me for purchases over (this amount)" and set the amount to $0.01 for whatever I wanted, so if you want this you may have to use this method.

@사랑해요 it is an issue with theft. They will reimburse you eventually, but you have to deal with all of the NSF fees if you have written checks, have ABP payments in progress or scheduled, or have gone on websites and made payments. If your mortgage/rent is due, and your money is gone, you can't make your payment which could result in late fees and eviction proceedings. The headaches from trying to convince the banks of NSF's due to fraud. It is just a nightmare when attached to your checking account. With a credit card, your checking account isn't affected. I hope that helps. Have an amazing weekend!

I said what was up with the two guys in suits he said oh that was just the FBI and they were looking at our surveillance cameras because they were here yesterday fueling their vehicle and got there credit card information taken for $10k and were not happy. 😅 I only use my phone now via app or pay cash because debit card are not protected anymore it’s 100% on you. I have two debt cards, one is linked to my main checking account and stays locked away. I keep enough in that account to make my automatic payments. I have a different debit card that I carry with me, I usually use it for gas, groceries, etc., so there isn’t much available with that card. If l’m going to get something that cost more, get new glasses for example, I transfer enough to cover that cost. Also, if there isn’t enough available for a purchase, the card gets declined. Then I have to transfer money, but that requires me going online, to an ATM, or to my bank.

For years I used a debit card to get gas at the pump from the time I started working and got my own bank account from 2007 going forward. I had no idea that this could happen, but even if I was informed I would have to learn the hard way several times. I forget the first time it happened, but throughout the 2010's I'd have to get a new card because of fraudulent charges every 2 - 3 years. It wasn't until October 2020 when it happened once again. A coworker and I were talking about it and he told me about using a major credit card for online, grocery and at-the-pump purchases instead of debit because it's a lot more secure. He said just make sure to pay the balance off before the end of the billing cycle and interest is applied. I already had a Discover card that I had set aside for emergencies, so I started using it and ever since then, I've had no problems. I have notifications sent to my phone for every transaction that takes place no matter how small. Thank you for the video! It certainly helps to be more informed about the subject.

He then posted it on KZbin and contacted police. After he left the gas station, the owner closed immediately after he left and removed all the skimmers he had claimed to know nothing about. He also had them on the ATM and a few pumps. The skimmers were discarded at an unknown location and have never been found, but the moron forgot to turn off the very cameras he installed to prevent people from stealing from him. It was all captured on his surveillance system, and once he realized that he deleted the footage from the business computer...but the cloud is forever 😂

My husband and I got nailed recently at the gas station in a parking lot outside of a large retail store. I’m sure you can figure out the name of the retailer. There was a card reader in the pump. When he tried the tap and go it would not take the sale (big hint) he swiped the credit card in the slot and the card reader did its work. We got our gas and left. Next morning he was checking the purchases on the card and SURPRISE SURPRISE. We had bought over $700 worth of concert tickets! We called our credit company and stopped any further purchases. They had tried 10 more times but the parameters stopped them. BTW. The company that owns the gas pumps could not care less. I called a couple of days later to make them aware and they were rude. If you can’t use the tap and go then go. It might have something to do with the magnetic strip that reads your info.

Exact same thing happened to me. A lady paid her 6 month back rent of $5000 with my card. Credit card sent text message but money already gone. The credit card company said they would pursue it but couldn’t tell me what they did. Gas station got new pumps

Never use atm/ debit cards at pumps either for this reason. Only use prepaid cards so you limit your loss or regular credit card where at most for fraud you are limited to 50 dollars(banks usually don't even charge you that)

Zero loss with my cards, Credit Union covers all scams. Thanks for your comment.

@@LandingZoneHome they will eventually cover fraudulent charges but until they give the provisional credit at least ultimately make it final, scammers could cause people to bounce checks, mortgage payments, anything hitting a checking / savings account if the victim is wiped out between finding out there is fraud and it being caught. Granted the more robust the fraud detection for they have in place prevent this minimizes this but that's the main point.

Perhaps a list of businesses where skimming, etc. has been identified, with a "do not buy here", would be an incentive for businesses to watch their equipment a bit better. Something akin to the ratings on restaurants? Right now there is no loss to the owners because they get their money, don't they. We are left with all the troubles and tribulations after.

Best way is to go to a gas station brand that has pay by app on phone, shell, chevron Mobil for example. You pick your pump number and it unlocks the pump and you’re done. Your card never leaves your wallet.

I use the gas station apps. Most major brands have their own apps. They allow Apple or Google pay. My credit card never touches a gas station card reader. Bonus. They usually give you .05 to .10 off a gallon.

This is a very educational and helpful video. Gas stations are one of the most risky places to use your card; even if it's your usual gas stop. We prefer to go inside and have the attendant ring up a specific dollar amount for gas, they un-lock the pump then and we gas up to the limit of what we paid. If our tank is full before the limit is reached we can go back in to the attendant and they'll credit the overage back to the card. It takes more time, but is lower risk. I won't say no risk, because sadly, there are dishonest people everywhere so be sure to monitor your card accounts weekly, or more often if you're using your card in unfamiliar places (including on-line purchases). On line, I only pay with PayPal so my card info is safe.

I would file suit against the gas station where my card was compromised. The station should be held to a standard to keep their pumps correctly functioning. Even if you do not collect anything form a law suite the company will have to put their High Priced attorneys to handle this suit.

I'd say file formal complaints with the Attorney General, FCC and any other government agencies that are available to report fraud. call the district and main offices for the gas station, or store, and give store number and address if possible. also contact the company that services the cc reader/pin pad. THERE HAS TO BE ACCOUNTABILITY!!! companies can educate their employees on how to check the cc reader/ pin pad and verify that they've checked it with a code to enter on the keypad or something. beginning and/ or end of shift. this would narrow down time frame when the skimmer was put in place. yes, an absolute pain in the butt for the employees, but almost a necessity these days. we shouldn't have to be afraid to spend our own hard earned money. 🤬

I was charged extra $174.61 at Conoco gas station although I filled up $24 worth of gas. and the next day I filled up $26 but another Conoco overcharged me of $174.59 I am an Uber and fill up the tank everywhere in Colorado. I called Conoco customer service but they said that they have the receipts for $174.59 and $174.61 that somebody filled up 40 gallons of diesel or something. The other exacts amounts of $24 ans $26 do not show up. I am wondering if Conoco created their own receipt or scammed me I filed a dispute with my bank but don’t know if they can get the money back or not. Any suggestions please what should I do?

You filed the dispute with your credit card company so just wait and let them do their investigate. Keep our receipts. Good luck.

Good info, but I'm most curious about something you didn't address - HOW do these scammers manage to install a hidden camera at a gas pump? How do they manage to install a device that reads your card's mag stripe? Every gas station I've ever been to in recent years has cameras everywhere, and I presume that the scammers aren't actually removing the metal covers around the pumps to do this, as that would be obvious. I just can't picture in my head the actual process used to accomplish this....seems like it would be immediately noticed by either the gas station employees or customers.

I have no idea how closely the security cameras are monitored or it they are monitored at all. It does happen, even at ATM machines, Thanks for watching.
@trustme77312 жыл бұрын
They DO open the pump covers. You will notice many now have a special tape across the gap where the doors open. If the tape is broken, there has been an unauthorized entry. Big deal. They'd just get their own tape made. They never look at security camera footage unless there has been a problem. Frankly, station owners don't care.

I had my card compromised a couple of times. I was able to pinpoint the station where it happened. I talked to the station manager and they said most pumps are from same manufacturer and the same key is universal so easy to open for a criminal once they get the key. They put in the reader in a short time and then they are in business. I either pay INSIDE with my credit card or I pay with cash. Problem solved. Criminals are getting more sophisticated and bolder.

Up here in Canada I started using those reusable plastic sheets the government issues. Way faster than cards. You only have to pay once. There is no charge to use them. They are way funner to use. You don't need to get approval from your mom dad or bank before every purchase. No one can find out that lingerie you bought is not your wifes size. They work when the power is out You can lick them to boost your imune system. You can often get a better deal with them. They make you feel richer than the working stiff in front of you using his credit card for boxes of kraft dinner. You always have money on hand to buy some good karma from the street beggars looking for food, booze or drugs.

This is exactly why a business should check the cards with a drivers license! If they fail to, then the business should eat the fraudulent charges.. You cannot depend on the Gov't doing anything about these fraud cases--they just don't. Contact your representative and demand they pass a confirm identity for card purchases!!

What I would look to know is when you are reimbursed for the fraud, does anyone lose any money? Specifically, the bank, merchant or the card company(e.g. Visa).

I have been told by an expert that the tap pad is almost impossible to rig for skimming. It is a much more secure method than the card readers.

my brother had his bank account frozen at least 3 times because his debit card was hacked at a gas station. The first time it happened I told him to use a credit card and let the credit card company fight the fraud, well he thought he was smarter and it happened 2 more times to where he had to borrow money from our parents because he could not get to his account.
