A smallmouth bass story: In June of 1988, I hooked a medium-sized smallmouth that began to go crazy as I brought him closer. When the little bass was within fifteen feet of me I saw the reason why this bass had become so agitated. _Chasing_ this little guy was a much, much larger smallmouth that would have had the smaller fish as an appetizer. The larger bass's eyes were as big as 50 cent pieces. I rechecked that same stretch of creek twenty-seven years later and it'd filled in to the point where the long, deep pool could no longer support the smallmouths that once flourished there. Thanks for reading my recollections of my days on the water.
@FishHawk5 жыл бұрын
I’ve had trout and smallmouth do that. They follow/chase each other when you have one hooked. That’s kind of sad hearing that the creek has changed and is not able to support smallmouth anymore.
@TralfazConstruction5 жыл бұрын
@@FishHawk Yes, I was surprised to see the changes. The large pool/eddy was a comfortable habit for the bass. Once, a long time ago, a bass had jumped on the far side of the pool and the splash completely soaked a large boulder. This was in the late-'70s when I was fishing with my high school buddy. That stretch of the creek was approved for trout stocking up until 1975. Only recently the PA Fish Commission started stocking above that part of the creek and heavy rains in the spring and early summer will wash some trout downstream. I last caught a trout there in 2015. Hardly anyone goes fishing there now and it's evolving into a different experience for anyone that wants to hike-in the two miles.

@@JohnSmith-fq7hj It was a startling sight. I confirmed that I was in the right spot by noting the locations of a couple streamside boulders that still jutted-out as the had previously and most likely long before my time. The width of the stream seemed narrower too. The new growth trees on the banks may have enhanced my perception. I felt isolated too and I was only a mile or so from the center of town.

Great vid & wish is was there. Just a small respectful reminder that always try to prevent pointing the tip of the rod at the fish. Doing that, places all fight tension and weight on the line relieving the rod of its intended task and is just asking for a break-off. I can't tell you how many times I arrived at a favorite spot, tied my new crank bait, made the first cast and fought the fish while unable to keep it from submerged structure, rocks, etc. The Rapala is a proven winner as you showed us and sure would have like to have realized what was on the other end, even as seen through a jump before the loss. Good job!

Cricket Chuck I wouldn't narrow it down to county if I were him...lol He mentioned Chain Pickerel in the comments, so it has to be Eastern seaboard. He doesn't seem to fear water moccasins or gators, nor have a 3 finger dip in while fishing, so we rule out the south. Assuming he is in his home state, the accent rules out Mass, NY, Maine, Wiscaaansin and Minnesooda. Smallmouth abound in natural waters...I'm saying Pennsylvania, Vermont, Delaware, New Hampshire. Maryland is possible, but not probable. That would seem not to narrow it down much, but out west that could easily be one stare.

I use the greenish black version mostly and bump them off the rocks, Smallies, trout, and northerns will hit those on the edies, sometimes largemouths on slack water or bends. If they swallow the hook then I would agree but they're getting hooked in the lip/mouth area.. Not harming the fish

Obviously you know nothing about fishing...

@@theunitvector9805 yeah I can agree with that. Obviously a hook in the gut is pretty bad, but that doesn't happen often.

Here in southern California your"creek" would be considered a major river cause out here the "creeks andriveres"are just dry rock and sand 9 months out of the year. I'm origianly from Texas, so I know your creek.
