Nice vid. I used to do similar small stream fishing in So. Cal too. You'd be catching those fish that are ignoring your spinner if you get a nice little 3 wt/6 foot fly rod with floating line and 6x tippet. Small emerger and nymph patterns are deadly when working upstream and casting to likely spots above you. Barbless please!

There are remnants of an old population of brown trout that thrived and reportedly grew to huge sizes an old lake in that spot that has since been washed away. I've never landed one of these fish, but I have hooked into one and got a good look at it before it snapped my line. It was very aggressive, came out from an undercut below a little waterfall to take a salmon egg. Very aggressive strike and then returned to its hiding spot that I was unsuccessfully get him or her out of. Reddish-copper color sides with no apparent spots, but only got a quick glance. Not massive, I'm guessing 14-15", but football-like and seemingly very healthy. I've been back multiple times but with no luck.

I know exactly where that is, I’m very familiar with that area and have fly fished it for years. Winter season in that area can be very slow. I’m glad you are using barbless hooks, I hope they a single hooks too, since that is what the regulations are for that area. Artificial lures with a single barbless hook
@Surf1763 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's slower in the winter but I haven't had a day like the good old days in a while. You're wrong about the single hook. When this was shot it was barbless and artificial only, the single hook was not a requirement, I very specificly researched it. Now it's not even barbless, check the book for '21, single shank is specified for certain species like Sturgeon and it was not at that time and now the area is simply artificial lures only, not barbless.
@TheGhillieGuyYY4U3 жыл бұрын
@@Surf176 there are sings posted in that area. Barbless hook may not be a requirement, but I’m pretty certain it’s artificial lures with a single hook. I’ve fished that area for 20 years or more.
@TheGhillieGuyYY4U3 жыл бұрын
@@Surf176 cool bro. Nice vid. Single, barbless hooks are better and don’t harm the fish as much when releasing them. I liked your vid since it didn’t mention where that spot is. But you have now put that information up in a response to me, tisk tisk. Places like that won’t have fish in them if everyone keeps a couple. I bet you’d have better luck in that area if it was to become catch and release while using only artificial flies. No need to reply, I’m done...

16 and over need a license with a trout stamp. You absolutely must know where you are fishing as the regulations can vary from stream to stream and even multiple zones on the same stream. If I recall correctly the general bag limit is 5 per day with 10 in possession. Again, some sections of a stream may be catch and release only, or the whole stream.

@Surf1766 жыл бұрын
Thanks , sorry I missed the comment. You just need a license and to check the local rules. In this and many places you can't used barbed hooks and only artificial bait/ lures. This is fun fishing but if you come here you have to fish the Sierras. Hike or pack train deep in, the Kern River and many other mountain lakes and streams. Also, try and fish the Pacific out of San Diego while you're here.

All I can say is a #18 green mosquito fished dry. That is exactly the type of creek I love to fish. I spent 30 years fishing Big Rock and Littlerock creeks in the San Gabriels flowing into the Antelope Valley. As late as the early 90's I caught Brooks and Cuts out of Big Rock. Caught Browns in both, but not in Littlerock since the 80's. When I left in 2001 both were still supporting breeding populations of Bows. Not sure how access is to them these days or what condition they are in.
@yumi42847 жыл бұрын
Fished both those waterways since the 80s. The drought decimated the fishery. Havent seen any trout in both. Trash from weekend ravagers, moratorium on trout plants have killed the fishery.
@andyfletcher35617 жыл бұрын
Even in good years long stretches of Littlerock flowed underground by mid to late summer. Had to be pretty stealthy as you came up to fishable water, but even the worst years I could fish it all year. Big Rock, people screwed that up. The upper stretch, above the bridge, between the two campgrounds and above the second campground, with the feeder from the Punch Bowl, was the best. If you could see it from the road, it sucked. But back in those trees there were some good pools. That section by the cabins used to be beautiful. Then the "trashers" showed up. Mid/late eighties a local off road club decided to clean it up. As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Some of the "wives" thought it would be a good idea to knock down all the little dams and give those poor stockers a fair shot against we evil fishermen. Surprisingly, the USFS agent found that to be a sound idea. As long as there was some sort of flow though, DFG continued stocking up until I left Cali. I was starting to find the occasional 7 or 8 inch wild bow again. The native strain of bow was also just starting to come back. But I found my best fish below the bridge, more specifically, a skosh above the fire station to about a mile below Saint Andrew's Priory. Almost zero pressure. Real tough fishing because of the overgrowth, undergrowth, trees. I'm talking half the time my leader in the guides and just my tippet and dry dangling through a little opening in the bushes. Tied into about a twenty inch brown like that late one evening, through the hole into the bend with ancient elm tree roots in the undercut of the bank. I didn't stand a chance of course, but perhaps the most exhilarating 20 seconds of my life ROFL. But I got to see it. I got to FEEL it. And the thing I find funny, that was enough. It was disappointing, but in a very good way. Such a shame...When we moved to Palmdale, there were maybe 50k people in the entire Antelope Valley. Like from Barstow to Gorman. I loved those two streams. When I was on them I knew that all COULD be good, that we have a chance. Ten months out of the year I could fish them in shorts, flip flops, and my fishing vest and hat. Didn't need much gear. A few tapered leaders because the trees and brush were murder on them, a roll of tippet, small case of dries, mostly the green mosquitoes, little Adams, several sizes of elk hair caddis. My clippers and Ginkgo, smokes and lighter. An empty pocket with a closure for my trash. I could fish with the bats hitting my fly on the lay down cast and nobody said a word. I don't think I can still tie flies on in the dark like that. Fingers don't do what I tell them half the time in daylight. If you get the chance, try it somewhere in the late summer, just beyond twilight. Sun not set completely but the light doesn't reach the canyon floor, but yet reflects off the pool ahead anyway. Insects all around over the water and the trout feeding. No chance of casting now, It's gonna catch on SOMETHING, pop the fly off. So then, sometimes, I would just watch into the moonlight.

@@mbf3574 Thank you. I was never more at peace than when I was on either of those two streams. Google both streams. There are a couple of vids of Big Rock, and you can get satellite views of Littlerock. The vids of Big Rock are not where I fished usually, that's the area they messed up. But it will give you an idea. Find you a stream like those, and there is no reason you can't do it too. Well, not a lot of reasons anyway. I taught myself, starting with the cheapest fiberglass rod/reel combo I could get at K-mart.
