I would like to point out that jumpscares are usually seen as cheep when the movie hasn't "earned" one. when It is either entirely predictable or the movie hasn't instilled any feelings of dread or terror at that point. a loud noise and sudden image isn't horror, it's fear. I would argue that the difference is that horror is more of a lingering feeling of tension and dread.
@isaacgodfrey72596 жыл бұрын
I remember a bonus video in Until Dawn that showed these people hooked up to a heart monitor and watching cut scenes from the game. The person explaining stuff was trying to make a point about how they made it "real scary" by using "real science", but the instant the jump scare is over, the people's pulse immediately drops back to normal. As in, the imagery didn't *scare* them, it just surprised them. That's the difference people don't seem to understand... kzbin.info/www/bejne/eV68Yo2GaNCDjpI 2:12 if you don't want all the shish at the beginning. The kid is totally unphased

I Think jump scares are cheep because no you shouldn't be scared of something jumping out and going "Boo" real loud when looking down into that dark basement, you should be scared that you might see something move or god forbid start walking up the stairs in the pitch black darkness when you know no one is down there. What should scare you is the threat of something and not the noise it makes, I want to feel paranoid that something is around every corner ready to kill the people in the movie because I usually try to get into their position to feel scared. Jump scares are usually done in movies that don't care about getting you creeped out first anyway, a good horror movie isn't ruined because of them as long as they are pulled off well but bad horror movies do fail because they only rely on them to "Scare" the viewers.

@r0y02 Disagree. Silent Hill absolutely had jumpscares, abrupt scene transitions, monsters being thrown over fences into your fence, a few moments in cutscenes where you were treated to an abrupt visual-and-stinger. And there's nothing wrong with that. 'Jumpscares' are a cheap tactic when used without an understanding of why they work. If you think the jumpscare is the entire scare, you're doing it wrong; the jumpscare the punchline. It's the *payoff* for the buildup of tension, and used sparingly it actually helps. I was terrified playing Silent Hill games because the first monster encounter *is* a form of jumpscare (especially the Air Screamer bursting through the cafe window in 1), which establishes for the player the relationship between the radio static and the presence of monsters in the fog, which allows the game to do something as simple as play static in the background (even in a completely safe area) to immediately prompt a deep sense of dread in the player. If you do nothing but jumpscare after jumpscare without fostering the atmosphere or dread, then you desensitize the audience and cheapen the impact. But used the way they were meant to be used, as means of manipulating audience tension (both providing the threat of payoff and for relieving it-- see Alien's 'cat scares') they are extremely effective. As with anything, you just have to know what you're *doing*.

You act like jump scares are the only thing that can be "scary" in a movie, the only possible payoff that can create suspense and tension. Psychological horror and pressure isn't just the threat of something getting thrown into your face with a loud noise. So many horror movies rely on that fool prove way to startle the viewer. But in the end, you are apathetic during the buildup, because you expect the jumpscare already and have seen the setup a million times, then it happens and you flinch for a moment because there is nothing you can do about that, and after that you roll your eyes and are apathetic again. If you have to do that to remind the audience "HEY WAKE UP THERE IS A MOVIE GOING ON!" then your movie is probably crap. The way jumpscares are done in a lot of movies is the equivalent of somebody jumping around the corner and yelling "BOOO!". It is not clever and not scary.
@whycantijusthaveausernameo39938 жыл бұрын
Precisely! Too many movies use jump scares as a crutch and not a tool that has it's place. FNAF is good example of BAD Jumpscare usage while the Conjuring 2 is a GREAT use of jumpscares. Also as a little added factoid, Citizen Kane had a 'jumpscare' because the studio thought the movie would literally be too boring and insisted they add it to keep people awake. It was never meant to be there originally!
@lemonstalker8 жыл бұрын

Kindred Kokiri You need to work on your listening and reading comprehension. He is literally saying that the silent blackness of a basement is only scary because of the possibility of a jumpscare. He explains further how there would be NOTHING to be scared of if there were no jumpscares. Like that was the only reason anybody could ever feel tension or threat and it could not be done without jumpscares existing. He didn't just "defend" them, he put them on a pedestal and presented them as the absolute be-all and end-all. Now, I am not saying this is his full view on the topic, but he PRESENTED it that way. Hence why I wrote "You act like [...]" Assuming that this is NOT his actual view would be, you guessed it, an assumption. Because these few sentences are all we have to work with. Which brings me to the next point: Let's play a game that I like to call "Quote me". Quote me the point where I said that he "hates everything but [jumpscares]" What? You can't? Because I didn't even suggest that? Well, you lose then.

I see your very rational argument that actually makes a good point but dude, hotdiggedydemon already said jump scares are cool, so like...get over it.

No questions asked this is the best movie in Netflix history and I’ve seen it so many times there’s no count. There’s also a part two and i have no words for how much I love both. I always ask people to watch them and they DONT! Thanks for someone finally shouting it out so more people can know about this greatness that exists!

I think what he is doing is he has two categories for episodes on this series. One category is on movie reviewing, and the other is on trying to review it, but goofball interrupts it and it becomes a comedy animation.

3:05 This is a part of why I love a scene in ‘the nun’ Spoilers to the scene The guy enters a room and has to walk to the other side,where her friend is,but like 20 ... things are in the middle of the room,so he carefully walks around them... they all look at him while he walks,then the things walk out the room,the girl she reaches is the nun pretending to be her friend,but that’s he thing,the tense feeling is turned up to the max,being by the end a scarier experience than any imagery and/or jumpscare I have ever seen.

Well, the reason I don't like jumpscares is because it doesn't sit with me. It's just a short burst of fear, then literally no fear afterwards. I feel like a 'true' horror movie (in my opinion) is a movie that leaves this fear in you. Something that twisted your idea of reality or how you perceive things. I think that's a big reason why people say they 'don't like jumpscares'. Not because they're too scary, simply because they don't last longer than a few seconds.
@HyperfixatedRants5 жыл бұрын
Bro, this guy reads Warriors. Just because of this, he is now my favorite youtuber.

As someone who loves horror I have to disagree with you on jump scares. I am not afraid of a loud noise or something scary flashing up real quick. What frightens me the most are concepts. Horror is at its best when the idea of the story sticks with you for days or even weeks, when the feeling of dread and terror wont leave even when the lights are on and my wife cuddles with me. A jump scare is forgotten after a few minutes, true horror will be remembered forever.
@JapanskNinja8 жыл бұрын
Jumpscares sucks for sure. They are not scary. Flash a picture of a powerpuff girl and turn the volume up 100 times and I would jump and toss my headphones. Not because it's scary, but the sound hurts and the picture coming from nowhere is startling. It's also very forgetable in a film. A scary film would be Jaws for example, it made people afraid of swimming in the ocean, and the fobia is still there now more than ever. Original Blair Witch is a very good film for everyone who's used to jumpscares.

What I like the most about Creep's jumpscares is that they show how much power and craziness Josef has, and he uses them to pull jokes that he downplays immediately after, so when things get serious we feel that he's so much more of a threat.

That's right! Though you should just burn Warriors #3:Forest of Secrets, Warriors #4: Rising Storm and Warriors #5: A Dangerous Path on fire. The introduction of Cloudkit and the romance between Greystripe and Silverstream didn't do much for me. It clearly states that their romance and more kitty pets being invited to the clans is against the warrior code. Firepaw/Firestar was an exception because it was in a vision.

A jump scare is like being afraid of the dark . You're not really afraid of the dark but what hides in it. A jumpscare startles you for a second but then its awkward and you just have to say fuck you to the movie. A good scare is one that sticks with you and doesnt leave your mind immediately.
@saebafan4026 жыл бұрын
The Shining or Jacob's Ladder are a great examples of movies that are really scary without using any jumpscares (or really small amount of them).
