Creepy Bad Endings # 97

Toejam & Earl, the two groovy aliens from the distant planet of Funkotron. One day, when cruising the galaxy in their awesome rocketship, Toejam makes the mistake of letting Earl take the controls and promptly crashes it onto a planet you may have heard of: Earth.
Now the pair will need to find all ten parts of the spaceship and escape the deadly earthlings who threaten their very lives...
Bad endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world, something happens that, at best, creates a bittersweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win, despite everything that happened throughout your adventure. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

@@hackr6751 Zero leaves Iris for dead, and her death is for NOTHING, as Colonel, General, and all the rest return in X’s story still willing to kill, and the error of Repliforce is never corrected, even as their last survivors are hunted down from X5-X7, then they’re considered monsters by the time of the Zero series. X never raises a finger to help, never finding Iris and returning her to safety. It’s a tale of complete incompetence on the end of the “heroes”.

I remember when my friend and I played this via virtual console about a month ago. It went from him questioning what the hell was even going on to some weird lore about Toejam and Earl being ethereal gods who came to a primordial earth in order to bring order and end the endless layers, once we found our first invisible path and decided it was Earl creating “the very ground life will walk upon”, as well as because I said “Woah, look out Earl, it’s the temptations of the sin of Lust” when encountering a Hula Girl and referred to Toejam as “Father Toseph Jam, the priest of the funkatronian church of Earl”. And then he screamed at the top of his lungs at the sight of a mailbox monster and immediately shut off the game. It was a fun night. Edit: For the record, we had just finished a playthrough of Gunstar Heroes and we were both incredibly exhausted.

Reminds me of how the Lost Vikings talk to their families before they are abducted and then return to them at the end of the game. You can't complete the levels if one of your companions die though, avoiding this heartbreaking scenario.

I think the most interesting endings are ones you get prematurely (like dying in certain levels, checking certain conditions) and man i never looked at 2 player endings like that though. That is a a good point though what if you DO play 2 players and player 2 does game over what of that characters ending that he/she/it would have gotten?

There are few games that really made you feel like you were playing with your best friend. One of the most heartwarming things about this was that as long as Player 1 had enough lives, you could avoid this dark fate. All Player 2 needed to do was mash on their buttons and a little menu would pop-up, and Player 1 could literally give their life (well, one of them) to allow Player 2 another shot at completing the adventure together.
