midnight still stands as one of the best individual accomplishments for a single episode of television. basically one set, like 8 actors, and one of the most intense and stressful stories told. absolute masterpiece.

Fun fact (or facts): Professor Hobbes is played by David Troughton, who is the first son of Patrick Troughton who is the actor to play the Second Doctor and is the uncle of Harry Melling who is Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films.

I love the way this episode deconstructs the Doctor’s ego. Usually he gets EXTREMELY lucky that he meets people who line up with his values or are easily won over by his swagger and confidence. Here, he has no such luck, and when he’s got no authority or instant trust then the 10th Doctor especially is liable to spiral.

@ThePonderer
@ThePonderer Ай бұрын
@@unclekarl5219I never once got that implication, and frankly I think if that is the case it makes the episode weaker. The strength of the story is that sometimes humans are, by nature, untrusting and stupid and the worst of themselves. The entity isn’t influencing anyone; these people just lack strength of character.
@therealpbristow

@@ThePonderer Well, it *is* influencing/controlling Sky, and then manages to get control of the Doctor too. But I don't think it's doing anything particularly to the rest, just revelling in how easily they can be turned against each other by getting them scared.

It also shows perhaps the most important role of the companion; to be the buffer between the Doctor and the civillians around them, often, between his fasctination with whatever the horror of the week is, and as you said his ego, along with other factors, he can be off putting to the people around him, it is the friendly, more relatable faces of the more normal companions that are able to soften them up and get them to co-operate.

Midnight really was a stroke of genius at the time. A true mystery that never gets resolved. The Doctor being completely powerless against his adversary, unable to protect not just others, but himself. The Doctors authority being challenged in a major way. The Doctor's core belief, his faith in humanity, being challenged in a major way. And all of that with a fantastically-creepy setting.

The Doctor's silent but angry glare at Val who tried and failed to redeem herself spoke volumes there; he may love humans and be merciful but he won't accept lies from anyone and we know how ruthless he can be when he's pushed. As we saw from The Doctor's Daughter episode when he had to really hold himself back from seeking vengeance.

Also importantly she would never turn on him no matter how scared she got, which would make it a lot harder for the other panicking passengers to single him out.

I’m not sure how it would go with her there. Yes she’d defend the Doctor and back him up, but perhaps in an aggressive manner, which may just aggravate the other passengers even more. One of the reasons these people suspected The Doctor because he turned up out of nowhere. Having Donna with him could’ve just added her into their suspicions that the two of them were working together to cause trouble. It’s hard to say what would’ve happened but it’s safe to assume these people wouldn’t have been reasonable with her there either.

This episode is a great commentary on human hysteria. The characters all fed off each others fear, much like happens in real life. The mother in particular was subsumed by her fear and tried to get the doctor thrown out, she also said that she saw the being pass from mrs silvestry into the doctor when she didnt, others then agreed even though it didnt happen. Everyone went along but then when they threw out mrs silvestry and the doctor went back to normal they said started saying that they knew it was in her the whole time. Its a brilliant commentary on how fear makes people act in illogical ways and it highlights what happens all the time irl (unfortunately it happens more now than when the episode aired). The obvious one was the immigrant statement from the mother.

This imo is still the scariest episode of the show for me and i love it. There are so many eerie elements and in the end monster is still a mystery. But even more disturbing is showing how fear can cause fatal actions, bringing out the worst of humanity. And the doctor has no companions here to help him, he's all alone, and almost killed because of that. The ending is just depressing, everyone traumatized, even the doctor, and they don't even know the name of the woman who saved them.

Lots of great actors in this. Jethro is played by Colin Morgan, who went on to star in the BBC series *Merlin (2008 - 2012).* If you're looking for something similar to watch after you have either completed Doctor Who or its spin-offs, Merlin is a good series with lots of actors crossing over from Doctor Who and similar genre shows. I fully recommend.

@@TLC62 ever since I was a school kid, I was never able to decide who is my favorite actor, because after I watch something with David Tennant in, I'm like "David Tennant is my favorite", and then I watched something with Nathan Fillion in it and I'm like "Nathan Fillion is my favorite" and then I watched another something with David Tennant again... Well, at least I know they are my #1 and #2. David is a true brilliance though, I'm totally amazed about him. Being able to play both the Doctor (the most beloved incarnation of the Doctor, nonetheless) and Kilgrave in "Jessica Jones" should be impossible, but he mastered both roles.
@TLC62
@TLC62 13 күн бұрын
@@Kostyurik I don't know what kind of range Nathan Fillion has since I've only seen him in Firefly, but I'm convinced David Tennant can play anything. Heroes (the Doctor), anti-heroes (Crowley)(or would Crowley be an anti-villain?), to truly chilling villains (Kilgrave, real-life serial killer Dennis Nielson), and on and on. I am in awe every time I see him.
@Kostyurik
@Kostyurik 13 күн бұрын
@@TLC62 to be fair, I totally agree with that characterization of David Tennant actor's might, and I definitely can't say exactly the same thing about Nathan Fillion, because I never even seen him playing villains or anti-heroes, just good guys. But during "Firefly", "Rookie" and especially "Castle" Nathan Fillion demonstrated the widest spectre of emotions (including some incredible examples of furious anger you wouldn't believe he is even capable of, but he totally is), plus some outstanding comedic talent. Like with David Tennant and Nathan Fillion constantly switching places on top of my favorite actors list, "Doctor Who" and "Castle" were constantly switching places on top of my favorite TV shows list. Well, up until 2016 when "Castle" ended on low note (despite penultimate episode being brilliant and outstanding) and "Doctor Who" kept going on seemingly forever. But I highly recommend anybody and everybody to watch "Castle", even now in 2025. First of all - that's a ton of fun, and second of all - "Castle" was always underrated because "it's just another police procedural like CSI, NCIS etc", but it always was so much more than just another police procedural 😞So, if you have 124 hours to spare...

Even all these years later, this is still one of the best episodes of the show. The Doctor's only real influence is attracting the creature's attention, and being rational enough that the stewardess is able to follow his example and be rational herself. Which isn't a lot. But the acting is so amazing on a cast-wide level that everything still feels satisfying and complete. The atmosphere is tense and creepy without being dark or violent. I love it a lot.

I was at work listening to this (I watched this episode so many times so I have it memorized) and it's the only reaction of yours that I've listened to TWICE. It's one of my favorite episodes because it shows The Doctor at their most vulnerable. Tennant did such a good job showing in his eyes how scared he was while being helpless and manipulated. We never actually see the alien, never know its name or species name, but it's utterly terrifying with how it learns by mimicking and then taking over minds. I hope a future episode revisits that planet, but it's probably good that we also keep this one a mystery.

One of the things I really like about this episode is the cosmic horror of how? Like we are given so much introduction to how lifeless this planet is, then all of the sudden there is something. Which isn’t super unique but the way they build up to it and then never explain literally anything I think elevates that feeling.

Great reaction Emme! - this ranks among my favorite Dr Who episodes, I love how unique it is! Seeing the Doctor out of his comfort zone - no companion, no Tardis & stuck in one place with no way out is bad enough - but seeing him outnumbered by (rightfully) panicking humans makes it so much tense & chilling! But for me even that's not the worst of it!: the fact that the Doctor, who has been all around the universe & seen so much - has NO idea what this 'thing' is, what it wants, or how to fight it..... that and the glimpses of fear in his eyes even before he's 'possessed' is terrifying!!

The biggest hope I have for Doctor Who is that they never try to explain Midnight. Because that's just the thing! It's not explained. It's tragic, and it really shows the "a person is reasonable, people are not" saying. It's chaotic and people are turning on each other and the Doctor has no sway. They've turned on him, and then his own voice (his voice that he uses to get out of so much) is turned on him too. Normally I focus on how mysterious it is, but everyone talking about his vulnerability is totally right. I think it's the 11th highest rated episode or something like that (with the previous two being in the top ten as well) and it totally deserves it. Loved your reaction and how you focused/picked up on how scared the doctor was!!

Exactly why this episode is so amazing: we see what happens when the Doctor isn’t recognized as the Doctor, and all that means. He consistently saves the day by being clever. He has a take-charge demeanor that draws people in. If they don’t recognise it right away, he has a companion there to explain his brilliance. Here, declaring his other-ness and brilliance is exactly what makes the others distrust him. And the monster takes away his biggest weapon, his words. No amount of calm, logic, and leadership can break through mob mentality. The episode works so well, because we recognise it to be true. “We saw it go into him.” What?! They absolutely did not. That is a complete falsehood that common sense should tell them is an obvious lie. Their own minds convinced them the lie is truth and they then try and crush anyone pointing out the lie. Kind of like a lot of things being pushed in the world the last decade or so.
