My heart dropped when you opened the logbook and I recognized the handwriting... so fucking scary, especially after getting everything set up and settling down for the night. I am always more scared of other people in the woods than I am of potential wildlife encounters. And I'm sure you thought the previous visitors in the shelter were nice because they cleaned up and prepped fire wood. What a truly creepy experience.

While that is true, it's really hard to sneak around someone's camp. Everyone's different, but my awareness is naturally heightened when I'm camping, to the point I find it hard to sleep unless I'm backpacking for several days. Every little noise sounds that much closer and louder when you're out there alone. One night I heard what I could have sworn were light footsteps around my camp. I kept trying to get a glimpse but they eventually faded away. Waking up the next morning I heard the same exact sound and opened my tent to see a little fawn grazing about 30 ft away. Little bugger kept me awake longer than I wanted to be...

I know i’m late to this, was just looking for creepy videos to watch at night, but just wanted to let you know you basically walked into a horror movie. The “crazy writing man” is called Richard Donahue AKA The Wolfman of Helltown, possibly suffers from schizophrenia. His notes can be found all over the AT, supposedly. There’s an entire thread about the guy and he’s possibly wanted for murder. So, yeah, apparently he’s well known in that area and people are rightfully creeped out by him. Once someone called the cops on him, but they couldn’t find the guy. He probably left his notes in every possible shelter in that area, not just junk out there. He apparently leaves notes on electrical boxes as well? Truly creepy stuff, he basically haunts the AT, claims to have been involved in murders, but that could be his own delusions. Who can tell?

It's weird how forests have this supernatural vibe about them. In Eshowe in South Africa there's the Dlinza forest and Mpushini falls which are beautiful in the day and bone chilling scary at night. A feeling of someone or something is watching me. In the forest, which is bordered by the graveyards is a place called Bishops Seat where we had Nativity plays. It's dark and cold there as are the falls and has a feeling of sadness and despair. I don't know why but it's plain scary and makes one panicky. Guess the forests of the world have that aura about them. Maybe that's the challenge to everyday campers and Bushcraft adventurers. It is very beautiful out there in the wild. Humans are more dangerous than the sounds or spirits of the night. Ok..enjoyed your video and it brought back memories. Enjoy many more and be safe. Cheers 🍻.

Good man. Going completely out of your way to help out the two female hikers, was outstanding. As for the duck, my impression is it was a victim of hiker/camper/fishing trash, as the disturbed note-writer had a problem with people not showing respect for nature, and liked showing what others left in their wake. One of his notes states 'Trash pickup courtesy of Richard Donahue aka Wolfman of Helltown, Woody, etc.' (his nicknames) and '...how little they really care about the environment ... I've picked up trash and other items along the trails since 2011.’ Duck aside, Mr. Donahue should be avoided. I doubt many people read the notes thoroughly, but he claims to have been contacted by government staff, and told to 'leave the girls alone'. He also writes: '8-9 federal agents (FBI, Park Rangers, etc.) came up on me while I was camped here in 2011 during the early phase of the Scott Lilly murder investigation. I was most assuredly a person of interest and or suspect for at least a short period of time despite any illusions or assertations to the contrary...' He writes more, of course, but there's no sense pasting it here. PS: as a female I would not sign a shelter log with my name, only my initials. Good job on the video, I'm subscribing.
@generalmartok39902 жыл бұрын
There are people like this that basically live on the AT, bouncing back and forth between shelters once they've ruffled too many feathers in a given area. Obviously, they need help. The authorities can't do much since the shelters in most parks allow you to legally stay a week or more...if you exhaust that you can just move up trail, then move back, rinse and repeat. In my experience, if I meet someone like this, I will load up on calories and caffeine and make it a marathon day and put as much distance as I can between us.

Dude no offense, but you really didn't use good judgment on that trip! I wouldn't have camped within 20 miles of that clearly disturbed soul! I don't mean to come across as high and mighty but I was truly concerned for your safety. Glad you made it out! Next time, just get in your truck and drive...
@trevorlee79452 жыл бұрын
Thought the same thing lol would have went at the bare minimum twenty miles away because that guy wouldn't hike that far in 8 hours . The writings on the trash and in the log were clearly by a very troubled person and when you combine religious quotes racism and violence and rock lyrics you are headed for a crash .
@curtbrackenrich78832 жыл бұрын
That was my first instinct as well, if I saw that writing, all those notes, and then saw a guy camping nearby like that...well I think it would have been me saying "well I guess I'm not supposed to camp tonight", I would have walked around going back to my truck and gone home. I've been solo hiking very recently in Northern Michigan, where I had the strange forest silence of come over me, the hair on my neck was standing up and after standing there for about 3 minutes considering the situation, I turned around, walked back to my vehicle, and went home. God gave you a sixth sense, we need to learn to listen to it more.

Good you left, listen to your gut feeling. I think what I find odd about the other guy is why looking around so late at night in the dark...if your camping then you would be tucked away in your tent not looking around in the dark. weird!

The man who left the writings on the trail is believed to be named Richard Donahue, also known as the Wolfman of the Appalachian Trail or the Wolfman of Helltown. Based on information found online, his Facebook profile shows unusual posts, including random photos of people or objects with rambling captions, similar to the writings seen in the woods. There are also photos of animals and other unsettling images. One picture even shows a shotgun shell, which raises questions, though it’s unclear whether he owns a weapon. It seems likely he could be the person from the woods that night. His profile picture features him with his dog

That man has been hiking the AT since atleast 2013. From NY to Connecticut and beyond. He has a habit of moving around late at night around 230 am with a red head lamp so the person that wondered Into the shelter early in the morning more then likely was him. Who else moves camp that late unless some kind of emergency. There is a photo of him on internet, look up Wolfman of Appalachian trail or just his name. Crazy to think he has been out there in the trail for at least 8 years. And he seems to be more and more unstable as time passes. If you meet him, he will ask for dog food for his dog and if you refuse he may threaten you or come back later leaving crazed notes. He claims he has killed other hikers before but I think he is just making that part up. Better safe then sorry though I say.

I'm in UK, so no idea how things work over there, would there have been any way to alert Park rangers about the man and his cryptid notes? I hope those two ladies did report him because no matter how long he has been doing this it needs addressed.

You made the right choice leaving. Seems weird for a guy to show up the the shelter at 2 and 3 in the morning. I would have left as soon as I saw the duck and all the weird writing. I would not want to camp or hike there knowing some whack job is hanging around.

@sparkytuttle29662 жыл бұрын
I analyzed this closely and contrary to one person here, that was not a leaf. You caught a man with what might be dark hair or a dark cap. Since he found a fairly decent black cap within the shelter, I will jump to a conclusion...if this was just a guy coming up to the same shelter, he would have arrived soon, if was a lunatic who felt this was his area, he would lay back and watch what his prey was doing. That leads me to a final thought...this hiker was in potentially far more danger than he realized. Great catch. Great this ended well. Not great that this nut has been all over that trail, killing animals for no reason...whose next? He needs removed and assessed.

Good video. I want to know if you are awareof what you caught on video at the 7:55 mark. It's bipedal, walking on two legs and has a reddish/auburn color. At first I thought it was another hiker, but it doesn't look like it has an clothes on, cause it's one solid color. So, I put the video settings to 1080p, set it to full screen and Bingo. There he is. If you go to the part in this video when your showing a fire ring, in a campsite, and the part where you say "Where does the trail go?" (7:53) While the camera is panning to the left. Then you pan to the right and the camera stops moving, pause it at 7:55. Look at the center/top of your screen. You'll see someone standing, a ways away, in front of you. He's solid red, almost orange colored, like the color of the leaves on the ground. He's only there for a few frames, and he's in the shot long enough for you to see him immediately take off to the left of the frame. At 7:56 he's gone. Now... To me, That's pretty Cool.
