She eventually came up with a plan that once they're married, she can kill him instantly, so he becomes "Recently Deceased." This would cause him to have to go to (and stay) in the Netherworld, thus banishing Beetlejuice.

I mean, in the show, it's completely canon. BJ states that he isn't romantically attracted to Lydia, and that he just needs to get married to her so he can become alive again. That's it - there is no romance between him and Lydia, who he states as his friend, it's 'Just a green card type deal'. However, the same can't be said for the movie. BJ and Lydia don't have the friendship that they develop in the show - they meet once before the wedding, where they have a conversation about death and how Lydia wants to be where BJ is, whilst he wants out. The next time they speak is during the exorcism of Adam and Barbara, where Beetlejuice states he can save them for her if she gets married to him.

Song goes on, worry increases. They look down with their chin tilted 20° to their right, their face visibly saying "what the heck is going on here?". Heavily concerned for the female character but also curious, they finish out the song with terror, confusion, and hope that that the lyrics were just about a bad dream-they are not. They then scramble to find context 😌.

Everything you people stated is true. I, for one, didn’t care much of the movie version of Beetlejuice because of the fact that he ONLY wanted to become free and USED Lydia to get that. The Musical’s depiction of him is the updated version I’ve been waiting for (minus the wedding and stabbing)! It would have been so great just to see Lydia and Beetlejuice just become besties and sing more songs like That Beautiful Sound and coexist like they do in the original show.

Nobody’s gonna hate you for stating the truth. They’ve never had a romantic relationship whatsoever, regardless of what some shipper say. This song is clear proof of that. He states twice in the show that “it’s a green card thing”. He flirts with everyone EXCEPT for Lydia during the entirety of the show. I know he comes off as much more of a pervert in the movie but that was part of his character, he’s meaner and much more self centered, he definitely didn’t care for Lydia in the movie at all. He does in the musical tho bc they drew inspiration from the cartoon where they’re shown to be best friends. Yes he does use her in the musical as well, but in the end he says “i think i’m gonna miss you most of all, scarecrow”. What you said is completely right, they’re relationship is platonic.
