Crescent Park in East Providence, Rhode Island (1950's)

Here is some home movies taken at Crescent Park in East Providence (Riverside), Rhode Island during the 1950's. I don't want to spoil it by mentioning all the great things you'll see here.

Walking down memory lane. I remember begging my dad to take us to Crescent Park. Sundays were his day off and he was taking a nap and the 3 of us say dad take us to Crescent Park. He always did. They had really cool vintage rides there. Like the Bubble Bouncer, The Tilt-a Whirl, The Satilite, The Trabant, and the Whip. Crescent Parks roller coaster was "The Flying Fish, and at Rocky Point, It was the "Wild Cat". I went in the fun house called The " Hotel" It was sort of a western type theme to it. This was back in the 1960's when amusement Parks were all the rage! The rival to Crescent Park was Rocky Point and Lincoln Park in Mass. Those were the fun days. Anyone remember these rides and times back then? Today all we deal with is computers and smart phones! LOL

Thanks for reminding me about the Funhouse, I remembered that they had one, but I just couldn't remember the theme, and then you nailed it. I think I couldn't remember because I never heard of anywhere else having such a bizarre idea/theme (for me, at least) for an attraction, and since I was quite young I wasn't sure if I was just imagining this ride/attraction, I wasn't even sure if it was a Funhouse, or a Haunted House.

My grandfather always talked about Crescent Park. I dont remember if my parents ever brought me there. However, I frequented Rocky Point in the 70's and 80's. Even visted Lincoln Park several times in the 80's. Those were the good 'ol days.

Grew up in East Providence, RI. Riverside was part of East Providence. Live in Connecticut now and my brother moved to Florida. My parents took my brother & I when we were kids. Plenty of memories. The last time I was there was the summer of 2000. My brother and his family were visiting from Jacksonville with their two kids, 5 and 8 years old. They got to ride on the same merry go round as I did. The rest of the park was re-purposed to condos. Great that they saved the merry go round,. That is what we called it.

Thank You for Posting this as Well. I Am in Riverside a couple blocks away from the Park and I Truly wish I Could've seen this park the way it was. All we have now is the Carousal now in which me and my Family would go for a Couple of spins around it. If I ever were to become a Millionare the first of my priorities would be to bring back this park the way it was. Once again thank you for this soo I Could see this the way my past Generation has.

A dream of mine was to see pictures of crescent park. Videos to be exact. I would take my son and daughter there every Sunday. We had so much fun. She is gone now...So you can well imagine what this means to me. Than You. :)

In early 50's I lived on the other side of the water from the park and did the very dangerous act of walking across the ragged wooden trestle to get to the park. I only rode the merry-go-round trying to grab the brass ring. Oh, I did the roller-coaster once, was the last time I ever went on one again. Thanks so much for the memories.

I enjoyed Slater Park just north in Pawtucket. big lake, lots of woods with some trails. A pretty flower garden. It had a big carousel also.

Brings back memories. My mother used to bring my sisters and me there back in the 70's when I was just a kid. With the closing of Crescent Park and Rocky Point Park Rhode Island has nothing to offer in the way of amusement parks. The state really has been run down by bad politics and corrupt politicians.

Thank you for sharing this video. I have very happy memories from Cresent Park. I grew up in northern Connecticut but every summer my grandparents would bring us to Crescent Park. As a child I had no idea where it was - I just loved our times there. I remember riding there in the back seat of m grandparent's Hudson. I remember that caterpillar! I loved it! Getting chowder and clamcakes was a highlight of our trips to Crescent Park!

When I was a very little boy my grandparents brought me there and I vividly remember the car ride and a very scary rooler coaster like ride where you rode in a fish.

Great to see one of my favorite places from my youth again. My parents would take us here at least twice a year in the 60's up to the early 1970's. Always was a task for our folks to get peel us away from the place! I remember a snack bar across the street from Crescent had some tremendously tasty clam cakes. Sure would like to at least have some of those again. Thanks.

grew up in Rumford. But we rarely went to Crescent Park. Parents did not have much money. Back then, people did not really go out like families do this day and age to parks and stuff. At least none of the kids I grew up with went there much.

Great video. It brought back a lot of memories, especially the kidde land rides. I recall being afraid of the wooden clowns on the tricycle ride. I'll also never forget seeing the 3 Stooges perform live around 1965. Other memories:Being tall enough to ride the "Westward Ho!" alone", The Dodgem ride, the flying fish, Dollar Day (ride all day for $1), report card day (get a free ticket for every A & B grade), the train ride with a family friend named "Elton", and many more.

I lived about a mile away--I remember when the Tilt-a-Whirl fell and the Alhambra Ballroom burned down. So many memories. thanks to the women of East Providence and Riverside for saving the very historic Carousel.

I used to go to Crescent Park all the time as a kid. The park closed down when I was about 9 or 10. Cool memories. I'll never forget that creepy walk thru fun house. The floors were so slanted that you could easily lose your balance and plant your face into a wall. It was great. Thanks!

My Uncle Ernie ( Bruce) Operated the Bubble Bounce. I was always riding the Dodgems, (Bumper Cars). I remember the Motor Launch, down the Board Walk, from the Shore Dinner Hall. (boat ride ,it had a canopy over the top of it.) Riding the Merry-Go-Round, catching the brass ring. My grandmother watching the Merry-Go-Round, my mother doing the same.while we went on rides. Best years of my life. Now you have to drive for hours, and pay a kings ransom, to go to an Amusement Park.

Lincoln Park Was pretty 😃 👍 great too 😃👌🌜✨🌟💫 We Did go to all 3 pretty frequently but I'm sure there's plenty of kids who never made ITto any ofnem. I think Lincoln Park had the best Roller Coaster. Also Rocky Point is the park that most people remember because it was open the longest, but out of the three I think that's also the spot it deserved in the Holy Triumvirate of "Large" Southern N.E. Amusement Parks.

I'm only 32, but I remember walking next to the water finding the remains of that Doc that connected both sides over the water and not knowing what it was. Pretty cool that I stumbled upon this I've seen pictures too

Those were the days!!! Great memories, some not so great.....like the time I got sick and threw up lunch all over my friend after riding the Satellite. I can remember Sunday was Kids Day and you could stay as long as you liked and enjoy all the rides for $1. You can't even buy a loaf of bread today for $1.

I worked in the Shore Dinner hall during summer weekends with my Uncle Andrew and cousin Joe. Chowder and clam cakes and a slice of watermelon for $1.03. (3 cents tax)

GREAT VIDEO! I remeber my gramps went thea in the 1950's and used to ride the tumble bug twice a day. That;s how he lost hearing in his rite ear. Funny sidenote: My great uncle Eddy worked on the rollercoaster when he was in his 20's and lost six of his fingers due to a malfunction in the brreaks. lukily no one was injured!!!!! (cept for six fingars lol)

@BigTimeParkFan unfortunately I was a child of the 80's and the park was before my time. Only my older brother and third cousins got to experience it as kids before it closed. My family the McCusker's, Martin's, and Phillips ran the concessions stands, games, and some of the rides at the park throughout it's life.

It's actually pretty nice now compared to what it looked like when the carousel first reopened twenty-something years ago. If they could do the same thing with Rocky Point with a nice grassy area, maybe some ball fields, amphiteater, fishing dock, and repaired (ceiling collapsed awhile back) Shore Dinner Hall they'd be all set.

@ray2195 , you're thinking of the Rocky Point Shore Dinner Hall. The place I'm refering to was across the street from Crescent Park and certainly wasn't large enough to hold 1500 people. In fact I don't think it had any indoor dining at all. It was pretty much just a take-out stand. But they did have awesome clam cakes.

@restless2005 I think this was the bingo parlor. There's a video of a fascination parlor on cape cod that is still in operation. I don't think Crescent Park had one.
