And the worst thing, the cops treated fuel driveoffs with a shrug, because it was usually the lowest class of misdemeanor and would only be worth a ticket, not an arrest and prosecution, and thus not worth their time. I was working in a convenience store when the big post-Katrina price hike hit, and it was a huge frustration between apathetic police and an owner who refused to go prepay only.
@udovdh
@udovdh 6 жыл бұрын
licenseplates and such do not work for the police? No enforcement means WROL and agitation for all because of prepaying. Elsewhere they have debit cards with machiens that do a reservation on the card so you can fill up and afterwards charges the card. A great idea! Also, why can't you buy fule on a credit card that is not a US credit card? Is the credit card system also not failsafe? A small situation but great discoveries about the nation that once was the USA...

@jeremiahmiller6431
@jeremiahmiller6431 6 жыл бұрын
@@udovdh I gave the license plate every time, but if they stole less than $250 in fuel it was a Class C Misdemeanor, which was just a small fine, and the cops didn't consider it worth their time to chase them down. It would only be acted on if they got pulled over for something else. Also, in the US a card transaction can run as a debit, which only requires a pin and cannot be a pre-auth (eg pay-at-the-pump or restaurants allowing card-based tips) or as a credit, which allows pre-auth but requires a US zip code as part of it's activation. That's just a hard limit set by the US banking system, which absolutely is sub-standard compared to the rest of the world.

Yeah, US gas stations are weird like that. Most European gas stations let you either fill up and pay at the cashier or are self-service where you scan your card, it pre-reserves up to 150€ and releases the pumps. It then only deducts the amount you actually filled up.

Considering the number of fuel thefts at the pump you get doing post-pay in the US, prepay only makes sense. But also, pay-at-the-pump is the actual normal in the US. Poor Benny just got caught on the requirement for a US zip code. Next year a good idea might be to get a prepaid debit card and use that for fuel, it would simplify things greatly.

@Brick So then what did they do about it 10 to 20 years ago when that technology didn't exist / was way to expensive to be out fitting every gas station with one? Did aussies have to pre pay for fuel then or?

U haul builds their own trailers and I'd bet the odd pattern is to reduce theft. The might also be using a packaged hub / bearing from the rear of a front drive car, this way it is pre adjusted , lubed for life and only requires a few bolts to mount rather than a welded spindle / axle.

nothing... i converted our fuel prices to your prices in US Gallons - its just gone back up to approximately $6.40 a gallon (which is about A$1.69 a liter) So that's a lot cheaper than aussie fuel!

Americans use US gallon which is 3.8 liter, Australia used to use the British gallon which is about 4.5 liter.....so the cost is even higher for us using our measurements.....

BTW: Frieburger and Finnegan expressed interest in buying the spare barra you're storing in Finnigan's garage to put into their AMC Gremlin, which would be dope. (They originally wanted to put a hemi in it, but there's a scarcity of hemi blocks right now.) Y'all should spread the barra love by selling it to them, or at least helping them get one!
