Crested Pigeons drinking at a water trough near Mannum

Crested Pigeon's are one of our favourite birds, here they are drinking at a water trough near Mannum. They rarely spend time bathing, they fill up on water and leave very quickly, always on the lookout for predators. One of the few birds to extend their range since settlement. Here we were lucky enough to catch four of them topping up at the same time. At the beginning of the clip you'll also hear the Grey Shrike Thrush calling in the background.

I have 4 come by daily and I hoot back at them. While I wasn't looking one of them hooted and I instinctively hooted back.

Are the stones to allow any marsupials that might fall in, to get out? Around here I use a stick, just in case skinks, mice, etc fall into a bucket.

Yes thats one reason the stones are there, on the far side of the trough the stones form a ramp, it makes it easier for the Echidnas and reptiles to climb up to get a drink and the birds to bathe in... also we use sticks in our buckets so the geckos and skinks dont drown if they fall in.
