Crewe to Nottingham is an important regional service as it provides WCML connections for Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Nottingham.

This route has had some decent upgrades in the last few years going from mainly single carriage class 153 to 2 and 3 carriage class 170 and extending from Derby to Nottingham/Newark. It would be good if the frequency between Stoke and Derby could be improved and extended further to Lincoln.

Yeah I used to do the Crewe line years ago and always remembered getting on at stoke was a challenge as it was standing room only. A 2 or 3 car 170 is an improvement. The issue with increasing the frequency between Stoke and Derby is the bottleneck/congestion at Stoke, as you got Avanti, Crosscountry passing the junction that EMR uses to get onto the line Stoke, every so often. And that junction requires a low speed which in turn requires a certain amount of timescale where no Avanti or XC trains are in the area etc. As well as those issues, you also got platform availability at Derby, as the 2 platforms that the Crewe train uses, is also used by XC alongside EMR's intercity and Matlock and Newark/crewe services etc. Even if you can fix the bottleneck solution it would require EMR having extra units to provide the extra services.
