Great video as always, but don't use thermal pads to hold those heatsinks in place. The pads are meant to be held in place by mounting pressure so they will fall off. You'll need either thermally conductive glue or double sided tape that is thermally conductive (pretty cheap from Amazon).

Great video and good to see another Amiga fan from Northern Ireland/Ireland! I have a TF1260 and use really low profile heat sinks and arctic thermal paste. Half of my 68060 chip is covered with heat sinks but I want to mount a small fan to blow some air across it. That will probably necessitate keeping the trapdoor off at all times for better air flow.

Thanks, there are a few of us in or around Belfast and there was talk of trying to arrange a small user group meet somewhere local later in the year. If it does go ahead I'll put details of it on the channel. For the 1260 I think if I can at least cover the centre of the chip and get a small fan in there, that should be enough.

have you tried cutting or belt sanding the heatsink down some, find out where the clearance is on an angle maybe and just tapper it down a bit. id get a fan on that cpu as well even if they dont require them, as a rule of thumb, heatsink and fan on the cpu, keeps them nice :)

A chunk of playdoh etc. on the CPU and push down the keyboard to shape it and get an idea, then take the cooler to the belt grinder. You can also try K5-Pro compound for a really thin and viscous pad replacement. The cold SMD joints should improve with a pre-heated board.
@CRG2 жыл бұрын
Good idea, that will give me the profile then I can try and shape the heatsink to suit. The cold solder joint was just unfortunate but at least I got there in the end.

26:50 Cut the heat sink like a wedge. You don't need a big heat sink. It is only 50mhz and not 50ghz 😄

Its not the speed but the heat generated. Cutting the heatsink would be tricky I think but if I can find a means of doing it that will probably be the best option.

Hi Glen, I just have a smaller heatsink covering half of the 060 on mine (obviously the half furthest away from the front of the case) and then a fan off to one side providing some air flow. I have a rev 4 processor, at 50mhz it doesn't really get that hot anyway. The cooling is more important for the CPLDs in my experience.
@CRG2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice, I'm thinking of a wedge shaped heat sink although just need to find some way of making one. Belt sander would do it but don't have a belt sander. Running a demo for 20 minutes and it does it quite hot so needs something.

I've had a 1260 with an LC 060 since they were made publicly available. I've placed different sizes of small heatsinks in a staggered way (a bit like a staircase) and it's been rock solid since day one (as it's only an LC and it doesn't really need the cooling). I initially thought about getting a heatsink similar to yours and then grinding it down but it seemed like way too much work.

That might be an idea, would save a load of hassle trying to sand or grind down the one I have.

If we disregard the CPU versus FPGA and the pricing debate, is there any advantage to an accelerator like TF1260 over the Vampire?
@CRG2 жыл бұрын
Disregarding CPU vs FPGA and price.... No, there is no advantage to the TF1260 over a Vampire. But with all cards on the table the only advantage I could give you is that the TF1260 is using a real period correct CPU. I can't really argue price either as the prices of a full 060 would probably put the TF1260 above the cost of the vampire. You may argue what's the point and all I can say to that is that for me anyway, an 060 is one things I've always wanted and purely as an accelerator the TF1260 does that job very well.
@AnnatarTheMaia2 жыл бұрын
@@CRG that makes perfect sense to me: if you've always wanted an A1200 with a genuine MC68060, then things should be built together exactly as you want them, and that is final, because that is the criteria. I'm always looking to put all of my computers to some sort of practical use, and that requires processing power, and as far as I'm aware, the Vampire provides the most processing power on the Amiga.
@CRG2 жыл бұрын
@@AnnatarTheMaia it's certainly one of the more powerful options but I also would consider the pistorm. The pistorm32 is now starting to filter out to people and will be a very fast option for the 1200. I'll hopefully be getting one at some point for testing 🙂
@AnnatarTheMaia2 жыл бұрын
@@CRG what bugs me about the PiStorm is that it's an entire 64-bit quad core ARM processor emulating a 68060 with software emulation. Might as well run a pure ARM accelerator without the Motorola emulation performance penalty then (like Phase5 had the PPC Blizzard), but yeah that's a good suggestion if one is hunting for performance. Or maybe dedicate one core to emulating the Motorola and make the other three directly available as ARM cores to the system?

If you add an thick enough thermal pad, won't the metal backing of the keyboard help to keep the CPU cool?

Possibly although you'd need to be careful not to apply any pressure from the keyboard down onto the card. The 1200s edge connector can be a bit flakey at the best of times and putting any undue pressure on it might make it worse

Hi. Thanks for the video. What is the maximum clock rate of your scope and what is the clock rate that should be needed for that board?
@CRG Жыл бұрын
At the time the scope I had was only rated at 10mhz although anything over 1 or 2 and it really struggled. I have a newer handheld scope now thats rated for 120mhz although I've not pushed it anything like that yet. Scopes aren't a strong point of mine but as I understand you really need something rated twice of what you're looking to scope so for this card 200mhz plus. Take that with a grain of salt though...

There is a custom cooler that sits between the chip and the socket which extends up beyond the cpu into the clear space in the case. I should probably get one so I can use this accelerator with confidence at the higher clock rates.

Hi Glen, I just spend 15 minutes scrolling through all my comments on KZbin videos but i couldn’t find the video I responded to earlier but you had a video a while ago where you literally asked if it was possible to have ISOs on a storage device and mount them as if they actual DVD- or CD-ROM drives. And the answer I have for you is, yes, that is possible with an external SSD housing from IODD. It’s sold as a solution that autonomously encrypts/decrypts the data on the drive that you connect to it. But one of the other features it has, is the ability to mount any ISO files on that SSD as an additional device that you can boot from if you wish. And the encryption is not mandatory for this to work so don’t let that scare you off. I’ve got the IODD 2541 and I got it from Amazon for less than $100 (no SSD included of course). I hope this will make life a bit easier for you without having to burn ISOs to CDs or DVDs all the time for one-time use. Take care, Robert.
