British Legion stalwart John Keeley, who has lived on Canvey Island since 1950, recalls the East Coast Flood while attending the 60th anniversary Commemoration Service at Chelmsford Cathedral on January 31, 2013.
Mr Keeley was 14 years of age when the flood overcame the earth defences orginally built by Dutch navies to the north and east on the island, wreaking havoc and claiming lives - as it did on the coasts of Belgium and the Netherlands.
On the night of January 31 and throughout February 1 the worst natural disaster of the British 20th Century left more than 300 people dead along the East Coast.
Across the North Sea the situation was even worse, with nearly 2,000 people losing their lives in just two villages.
He was introduced to the Princess Royal at a reception at nearby Chancellor Hall, which was recently converted into the Evoke nightclub.
