I recall the late Salim Durrani who I knew called to Brabourne Stadium to handover to me pass to islam Gym stand for India West Indies game 65/66 series. I accompanied him on the eve of the test to Nadkarni Sports shop Mumbai, where he selected a bat and told the proprietor that he would pay for the bat after he gets the ₹250/- at end of the 5 day test. With this money they had buy their own cricketing gear. Those were the days the players playing for the country considered it an honour.

Rajdeep, you said BCCI is the richest sports body n they are rightly giving players their due including Ranji Trophy players. But BCCI can surely do good for other sports as well which needs finances to grow. Due to constructions all over the youth of today do not have open spaces to play which BCCI can spare a thought to. Build grounds with basic facilities n small stadiums. How about conducting tournaments of all sports at the school n college levels which sadly has few inter school and intercollegiate tournaments n which are not conducted well. Through your Straight Bat please speak about these aspects. No point in making the rich cricketers richer. We need to look elsewhere as well. Rgds.
@abrarahmed57552 ай бұрын
Why should the BCCI be responsible for other sports in the country? Seems it’s an easy target. What is the rich Indian government doing? PM Modi takes credit for sporting achievements but does nothing about the wrestling federation. So many federations are looting money and doing nothing for the sport.

I can't agree with your views. The Indian cricket struggled a lot as explained to reach this place now. There are some serious administrators like Sarad Pawar, Dalmia, Raj singh dungarpur then Ganguly ensured that the board attracted many corporates. I agree there are a lot of politicians involved in BCCI cricket. However, the board is performing well. All other sports boards are rotten with politicians, sexual abuses by the people, money for selections and commissions from the corporates etc. In this situation which corporate will come to support. Look at IPL, everything is managed by corporates as the involvement of others is minimal. Luckily IPL franchises are searching and nurturing the talents. This is easing the selectors jobs. Can Govt of india dissolve all the other sports boards and file cases against the corrupted people? No. If all these boards were dissolved and handed over to the corporates then only we can see good results in other sports.

Rajdeep: This was one of your best oped pieces. I totally agree with your concerns regarding the role of administrators in Indian cricket. I too cringed when I saw at the presentation and celebration in Barbados, BCCI administrators handing out the medals to the Indian players, and celebrating with the players with the trophy. This was the time for the players to celebrate who had crafted the victory not for the officials to be part of the celebration. The support staff and the selectors played a bigger role in the success of the team, next to the squad, than the administrators. I totally agree with you the Rahul Dravid has always done the "right" thing so calling him the conscience fo Indian cricket is appropriate. Maybe BCCI administrators can learn something about modesty and class from the way he conducts himself. PS; The richest league ius the NFL in the US, which is what you mentioned, but the graphic showed the United FLootball League (UFL!).

Sir, when was the BCCI not controlled by political bigwigs? Weren't Sharad Pawar and Madhavrao Scindia BCCI presidents before? Never saw you complaining about political interference back then. Or is it that only the BJP has to shoulder the responsibility that comes with big money? As for BCCI controlling the sport, it does so because India contributes almost 70-80% of the ICCs revenues. This is the money that the ICC uses to promote cricket in numerous smaller countries. Even the chief of Pakistan's cricket board recently admitted that PM Narendra Modi could shut down cricket in Pakistan whenever he wished. Such is India's clout, and people with money power will exercise influence. We all know how much 'fairness' and 'responsibility' the ECB showed when they were ruling the game. They even stooped down to the level of refusing a honorary pass to the BCCI president at that time. I don't think the BCCI is anywhere near as bad. We are allowing even English players to make big bucks in the IPL and giving them great respect, something they never gave us when they had clout and we didn't. India and Indian cricket have earned their place in world cricket solely due to hard work and resourcefulness. We never had any big oil money or any other form of wealth like that, which we used to buy our clout. We have earned it the hard way and we have every right to flaunt it.

Seriously man, to what levels ppl can go to peddle their agenda 😂 I've seen Rajiv Shukla in the Board since the day I started watching Cricket. Nobody questioned or had a bad stomach over it. Sharad Pawar was involved, no one made videos. The only thing ppl were concerned of was whether we were winning or not ....and we were not winning. For the last 10 yrs, even after being the best.....we had nothing to show. Thats why we saw the crazy outpour of emotions. Its a collective success for all parties involved. I do not see anything wrong in Officials going overboard for once. As soon as we regularly start winning ICC trophies, the euphoria will obviously die down. BTW if the worst thing ppl can find against Jay Shah is being part of the Team celebration, looks like he is doing a pretty fool proof job 😜

Rajdeep - Everything you said in this episode made good sense, undoubtedly. But beneath the narration, one can clearly see your one sided obsessed hatred for one party. Please note that there is one Rajiv Shukla who is also the office bearer of BCCI and you didn't pull him up! Since you dwelt on history right from your dad’s playing days, I expected you to also narrate the dominant roles played by influential politicians and businessmen of yester years like Sharad Pawar, Jagan Mohan Dalmia, Arun Jaitley , N Srinivasan etc. That's what is truly the hallmark of neutaral journalist, if you claim to be one. I see a similar bias in you on political analysis.While I appreciate your constructive criticism of BJP leadership in running the Govt., I have rarely seen similar criticism by you of state governments run by WB under Mamamta for last 10+ years or DMK govt or Govt of Kerala or Arvind Kejriwal’s Delhi or Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Bihar etc. Please become a balanced critic of all wrong doers
