One of my heroes. When I was a kid I always wanted a Duncan Fearnley bat because Ian Botham used one.

Botham was the best amongst the 4, because he could win the match with his bowling or batting or both, just a shade ahead.
@johnsutton3600 Жыл бұрын
I could not stand him when he started. He would get 5 for, bowling absolute rubbish. Then he would do it again, and again against chappell and Walters etc and eventually I thought, " there might be a bit more to this."

@@ucantseeme7477 that was my point. He SEEMED to be bowling tripe. To continually get 5 for and end up with 383, he just had to be good

Ian Botham was the first superstar all-rounder I watched and instantly loved his amateur attitude towards cricket and life in general. 383 wickets and 5200 runs in test ask a lot and I must mention that what I saw on TV was the first mega star on cricket arena. Hats off

Frances Edmonds (Phil Edmonds' ex-wife) wrote a couple of books on England tours of the mid-80's. She said, of Botham. "Always be wary of someone whose weight in kilos is higher than their IQ". Honestly, not bad advice.

Sorry, you are not with the beat. He had a terrible reputation in the 1980's after his association with Tim Hudson, trying to be a Hollywood actor and then got found out for lying through his teeth for smoking cannabis on the 1982/3 tour (he tells alot of lies, the latest being he gave away all his mementoes - but then sold them all at auction!). He did a charity walk which rebuilt his reputation, and provided huge financial personal rewards to him and his greedy wife, by way of commercial contracts, TV and advertising and sponsorship. He then got a knighthood, baronhood and lordship when his entire motive was for himself. Anyone who can't see through that is a misguided fool - except his cronies, of course.

Beefy did get runs against the W I,but was unable to convert them into centuries. Such was Botham's profile,back then,that the W I quicks had a tendency to treat him,almost,like Tony Greig. In other words,they generally bowled faster to Botham than they did to other players. The 3 other great all - rounders of his day did not have to contend with the extra effort the W I bowlers put in against Botham. Also bear in mind that the other 3 all - rounders all scored their centuries on slow pitches, whereas Botham nearly always had to play the extreme pace of the W I on either even paced or fast pitches. Details,such as I have outlined,really do make a difference at Test level. I would still place Botham in joint first place ,amongst his rivals,along with Kapil Dev. You may have a different opinion,though!

Imran and Kapil were better than other two
@adwait73 Жыл бұрын
All were special in their own way. Botham had scored more runs than the rest and only all rounder to score double century. Hadlee has taken highest wicket than rest of the others in lower test matches. Kapil and Imran were all true match winners who led from front and captained world cup wins. Imran was fastest than others. Followed by Hadlee. Kapil was highest individual ODI scorer for 9 years. Both Kapil and Imran were true champion skippers, other two didn't lead their teams.
@axisfolate4300 Жыл бұрын
I'd have to check up on the stats but the way I think about them is roughly: Kapil and Botham were free spirits who just enjoyed the game. Kapil looked after himself while Botham didn't and so while Kapil declined fairly slowly as he aged, Botham's performances fell off a cliff and aside from a few decent odi performances didn't really play well after 1986-7 (and he plodded on for 6 more years). Imran and Hadlee were more cerebral, Hadlee almost from the start, while Imran brought his intellect to bear a little later. Hadlee was I think probably the best bowler over his whole career, and the weakest batter. For the last few years of his career, imran's performances were unbelievable, and he seemed to get better as he aged. I think I'd give it to Imran over a whole career, but perhaps Botham reached the highest peak, when he was young and before all the beer, pies and parties got to him.
