I was at this game... it was played less than a week after the New Years test(5th and deciding test of that tour which SA won) were played(I also attended that test match prior to this game). If I remember correctly, SA won this ODI series 6-1, and the next game was that infamous one where Dave Richardson broke his hand keeping behind the stumps which ruled him out for the World Cup, and so Gary Kirsten had to take the gloves for the remainder of the ODI games. Despite that, this was quite a golden era for SA cricket, some really good memories for me as a fan. Also that Benson & Hedges match jerseys were arguably one of my favourites ever.

Wonderful time for South African cricket those days. Allan Donald was definitely the best fast bowler in the world - all due respect to McGrath, Ambrose, Walsh, Waqar and Wasim. But we just couldn't win world cups. We have horrible memories of the agony of the 92, 96, 99, and 03 tournaments.

Those days, South Africa used to have a very deep batting line-up..it was almost impossible to restrict them to a low score..even if they were 6 or 7 down, they still used to have quality players down the order like Pollock, kusener, McMillan, Boucher who used to take them to a defendable score..

Guys like Boje who was a very respectable all-rounder were in the system as well at this time. The late 90's were a great time for cricket.
