The 2006-07 Chappell-Hadlee Trophy stands as one of the most significant moments in New Zealand cricket history, where they secured a stunning 3-0 whitewash against Australia in a three-match ODI series. Held from February 16 to February 20, 2007, this series was defined by New Zealand's tenacity and brilliance in all three matches, while Australia, missing several key players, struggled to keep up. Here's a breakdown of the epic encounters:
1st ODI: Wellington (February 16, 2007)
Result: New Zealand won by 10 wickets.
Australia: 148 all out (49.3 overs)
Key Contribution: Michael Hussey 42 (96 balls)
Shane Bond: 5/23 (10 overs)
New Zealand's pace spearhead Shane Bond was the star of the match, dismantling the Australian batting lineup with a devastating spell of fast bowling. His 5/23 reduced Australia to a modest 148, with Hussey’s 42 being the only innings of note. In response, Lou Vincent (73)* and Stephen Fleming (70)* made light work of the chase, guiding New Zealand to a ten-wicket win, completing the chase in just 27 overs.
2nd ODI: Auckland (February 18, 2007)
Result: New Zealand won by 5 wickets.
Australia: 336/4 (50 overs)
Key Contributions: Michael Hussey 105 (84 balls), Brad Hodge 97 (86 balls)
Australia bounced back with a much-improved batting performance, posting a formidable total of 336. Hussey led the charge with a century, well supported by Hodge’s 97. However, New Zealand once again rose to the occasion, chasing down the target with an over to spare. Ross Taylor's 117 was the backbone of the chase, while Peter Fulton (76) and Craig McMillan's blistering 52 from 30 balls proved decisive in the later stages. McMillan’s power-hitting swung the game in New Zealand’s favor, sealing another famous win.
3rd ODI: Hamilton (February 20, 2007)
Result: New Zealand won by 1 wicket.
Australia: 346/5 (50 overs)
Key Contribution: Matthew Hayden 181* (166 balls, despite a broken toe)
In one of the most unforgettable ODIs, Australia, powered by an outstanding knock from Matthew Hayden, posted 346. Hayden’s unbeaten 181 was a masterclass in ODI batting, especially given his injury. However, New Zealand scripted a thrilling chase that went down to the wire. Craig McMillan’s 117 kept New Zealand in the hunt, while Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 86, including a six and a four in the final over, ensured New Zealand’s victory by one wicket. New Zealand finished at 350/9, sealing a historic clean sweep.
Key Takeaways:
Shane Bond's Dominance: His opening spell in Wellington set the tone for New Zealand’s commanding series performance.
Ross Taylor & Craig McMillan’s Heroics: Taylor's century in the second ODI and McMillan's crucial knocks in the second and third games were instrumental in securing back-to-back successful chases.
Matthew Hayden’s Unstoppable Knock: Despite the loss, Hayden's 181* remains one of the finest ODI innings under pressure, especially considering his injury.
Australia’s Concerns: Missing players like Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, and Brett Lee, coupled with fielding lapses and poor form, exposed some vulnerabilities just before the 2007 World Cup.
New Zealand's series win was a major confidence booster leading into the 2007 World Cup, whereas Australia had to regroup quickly after such a significant defeat.

It's incredible to see a scorecard showing 59/0 in 14 overs or so in this day and age where scoring 100s has become a reality and certainly having a score of 70+ a norm. And the fun fact is both the teams playing here scored identical runs around that over mark showing it was a norm back in the day (mind you If Australia were the top team in that era, NZ were the number 2). This makes me wonder and fill me with gratitude that we had unsung players like Virender Sehwag who used to score team 100s in 14-17 overs (on his day) against any attack and anywhere in the world. I must say, had Sehwag started his career in this era, he would have certainly scored 300 runs in his ODI innings.

Well done to New Zealand! Australia lost due to several key players didn't play in this series such as main player who is the captain at the time was ricky ponting and main wicket keeper adam gilchrist! Also andrew symonds wasn't there, brett lee i believed he was injured and michael clarke was in the squad but didn't play the series! The world cup 2007 was very important at the time but i guess chappell hadlee trophy still important as well! Amazing matthew hayden to scored 181 with a broken toe and still lost
