I used smart vinyl with my joy the first time the other day and was shocked at the big gap it left at the top. I thought how wasteful that was. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that. I do love the portability of my Joy over my EA2, but I am not jumping at smart vinyl unless it's on sale (a lot).

When I’m doing bigger projects, I like to move all the designs close together so there’s very little waste and no mat would be so much easier so I don’t waste the stickiness of my mats. But if I’m doing a small project using up scraps, it makes a lot more sense to put it on the mat and use SnapMat to maximize the use of scraps.

this has been super helpful as I have stopped using my joy...it seems that it butchers my vinyl unless i use smartvinyl...i tried this and it still but through it even on less pressure..its the original blade because ive barely used it since I got it almost a year ago

After 5 kids I need a hobby that might make a little money just selling around my community. Plus I can make things for myself and my family. I’m NOT doing shirts, mugs, tumblers, keychains, etc. I found something no one in my area is doing so I’m gonna try that. I like to be unique. I may do some of those things for my family if they ask but that’s it. Lol. Right now I’m trying to get my 2 walls in my bedroom renovated into a craft space. Sydney Taufen, if it’s still a fairly new blade that hasn’t made a significant amount of cuts so far, it “could” potentially cut through the vinyl backing and depending on how thick your material is, it could even damage the surface of the machine below it. That’s obviously a worst case scenario though. 😊

You can, but you would have to lay out the smart vinyl onto a 12” cutting mat designed for the Maker. Keep in mind that the smart vinyl has a thicker backing. This causes the vinyl to be lifted higher off of the mat than usual and closer to the blade. You will need to take that into account when choosing your pressure settings for the blade. I would do a test cut with “less” pressure to see how that works for you. 😊

Technically, yes! It’s more cost effective to use the regular sized vinyl on the explore air 2, but if you’re in a pinch, you can just apply the Cricut Joy Smart Vinyl to a Cricut cutting mat and cut it that way. Just keep in mind that you’re most likely going to need to switch your pressure to “less”

When I got my Cricut Joy this week and used the sample piece of vinyl that came with it I was really annoyed by how much dead space was left at the top before cutting. I would much rather use a mat and not waste so much material. I also want to give a thumbs up for Oracal vinyl. Way, way cheaper than Cricut brand and it's made in the USA, not China. Also look for Siser HTV for iron on. Again, cheaper than Cricut and made in the USA. Even when Cricut has 50% off sales their stuff is still twice as expensive as other brands. Love my Cricut Joy & Maker, don't love the Cricut materials as much although I have bought my fair share.
