I read this 20 years ago at a time of emotional upheaval and personal economic scarcity. The year was 2006, shortly after hurricane Katrina and I’d just started a new job but after work I’d wait under a huge Live Oak Tree in Tallahassee, reading For Whom the Bell Tolls or Crime and Punishment- whilst waiting for my partner to finish his job. It would be another 5 years before I ever got a cell phone..just crazy to me
