Fun fact: Rockstar and Vis Entertainment’s State of Emergency was originally developed as a Sega Dreamcast exclusive. But after Sega threw in the towel in the console business development was shifted to the Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox. Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven is one of the best in this subgenre. Driver 3, while being somewhat broken, really was a good game. I remember loving it at the time. Any game like that was immediately in deficit due to being directly compared to the GTA games of the time. Shame, really. I was fortunate enough to meet Michael Madsen at a comic con in London about 7 years ago, and he was a super nice guy. He came out wearing a white leather jacket, aviators, and a cowboy hat. You could tell he'd had a heavy night the day before as he was pounding down Red Bull like there was no tomorrow, but man, he was the epitome of cool. I went all gooey when I heard him talk.

The problem with Driver 3 is that it was a definition of "overhyped and underdelivered". The problem wasn't in comparisons with GTA, but it was marketed as something beyond the then-current realm of video games. Then, when it was finally released, the whole glitz of hollywood-like production seemed like a huge waste of development resources with empty miles of cities, clunky on-foot mechanics, and, in case of the PC version, tons and tons of bugs. Plus, about the whole cinematic feel. Players have already played Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven and The Getaway which delivered without the unnecessary hype and Adrenaline Rush product placement. Even the cast of the likes of Michael Madsen and Michelle Rodriguez, which was supposed to be one of the biggest selling points, was nothing new by 2004, especially considering that the main competition by that point, GTA: Vice City, released two years prior had people like Ray Liotta, Gary Busey and Burt Reynolds.

Driver series could had been much bigger, if only developers were a bit smarter and took a bit more time with every game. For example Driver 2 was an amazing game, but it was locked to PS1, and not releasing it on PC was a huge mistake, because of the hardware limitations it suffered from on PS1, if they released it mainly for PC and then ported it over to PS2 and Xbox, Driver 2 could had easily been, what GTA 3 was for GTA series, but they didnt have vision for the very very near future sadly. DRIV3R could had been a masterpiece, if only it was given more time, but they rushed it, story was simply amazing, actors were phenomenal, plot was great, main antagonist was perfect, idea of multiple cities just great, CGI cutscenes were way ahead of their time, BUT gameplay was pretty bad, game was not polished and properly finished. Driver: Parallel Lines suffered almost the exact the same fate as Driv3r, though Parallel Lines was a bit more polished gameplay-wise, story was great (though not as amazing as Driv3r`s, but still great), but once again, gameplay was the culprit why the game wasnt a big success. I would kill for a game that has Driver 2. Driv3r or Parallel Lines story, but with GTA gameplay mechanics. Same goes for True Crime: Streets of LA, amazing game, but unfinished

And this is why I've been saying for years that GTA needs competition nowadays so that we can have more options in the open world crime/gangster genre like we used to back in the days. Otherwise we'll be stuck in an endless boring cycle of GTA 5, GTA 5 & GTA 5......
@Vynsent6 ай бұрын
I gotta agree! I think most other studios just gave up on competing, but there’s still plenty of room for others to make something unique!
@thechosenone21236 ай бұрын
@@Vynsent Yea & thats exactly the problem. Other studios got lazy and stopped competing, so now Rockstar basically has a monopoly on this whole crime genre. Unless some serious competition comes back, we'll be stuck with the same decade-old outdated GTA 5 being milked endlessly. Without competition & variety, the genre has become repetitive, stale, predictable, un-innovative, un-exciting, and BORING.

@@Vynsent I think the problem is the developers and the leadership of the studios. A lot of these people aren't into crime movies or shows or old crime games. These new devs are into comic books, superheroes, anime etc. There's nothing wrong with that but that influences their interests and what games they choose to make.

They dont make games like these anymore.... so many games right now do not appeal for me. Hey look idc what others think about me saying this. But i've been always want to see more crime games for all console generations.

The old game’s definitely hit different! I’m hoping that the new GTA will give us the crime fix we need tho 👏

@@Vynsent I'm pretty sure GTA 6 will be huge and immersive. Ever since i played RDR2 on PS4 and then on PC.

8:11 Driver 3 has its flaws, but those flaws are nowhere near what the “game reporters” spread around back then. Many games got bad receptions due to lack of $$$ to buy those journos opinions. I personally think of Silent Hill Origins and Homecoming as examples of that.

Absolutely! I was a homecoming fan as well :)

State of emergency is a decent game evan tho its outdated true crime is one of my favorite games but evan I'll admit it's hasn't aged well & kinda hard to play now i find true crime new York to be a better game honestly

True Crime NY is dated but still dope af. I have yet to see a more accurate map of Manhattan in a game

I definitely do enjoy New York a bit more, it felt more improved on the original 😁

Too long spent on each game, and no chapter markers to skip over games you don't want to listen to.
