I live in AZ and not even a week after my dad died someone broke into his house when we called the cops and told them our neighbors witnessed it they didn't even bother to go get there statement they just sat in their car laughing to each other while writing their report while my mother was hysterical even when given funding most cops couldn't be bothered

God AZ cops are terrible. Once I worked at a Hotel, and the cops were called on someone whose neighboring room heard slamming, and screaming through the walls. Cops showed up, and left without even talking to me as the night auditor, when I was trying to figure out what the hell happened. Despite telling me they would let me know after they were done. Also they shot a man in a wheelchair in the back 9 times just recently.

During anti-war protest on Hollywood Blvd around 2002, a cop outside my apartment building was screaming at everyone. I asked why he was so angry, he said, "this is keeping me from doing my job!!" A month later I left for work early in am and a cop stopped me from crossing street. He was smiling and laughing while waving me to finally proceed. It was the SAME cop from protest. Here, he was stopping people from walking while they were filming Charlie's Angles part 2. So Constitutional right to protest = bad, being private security for Cameron Diaz = good. This is a very ignorant comment. Even if people are caught and convicted for theft, their time in prison for under $950 worth of goods is never anything close to 15 years. Most of the time it's not even prison time, it's just a simple court case and a fine. It's better not to exagerate something like that and misinform people. There's a difference from wanting people who shoplift to be held accountable with a fine and wanting them to serve long prison sentences because they just hate poor people.

So.... what exactly is an exaggeration? The police are trying to catch who they can, and they are charged with the crimes where they get caught. The problem is the media/folks that believe their shit, who inflame the situation to where they seem to indicate these crimes should have been pre-cogged by the police and the potential criminals locked away.... for life. I think I am a part of this problem. In high school I was given the task of making a documentary and for some reason I decided to make a film about rising crime. I stole a 5 year old news clip about rising crime rates, then I interviewed a professor who said crime rates were actually falling. So I decided to make the documentary about overblown news instead. Issue was that the video of the professor was so off-frame that you could only see his bald head and eyebrows sticking out in the 480p footage. I had no idea how to use a camera, but my teacher gave me a D so I would say it was a job well done. I am considering to quit my job and take up a career in journalism because my topic was clearly better than Fox.

I got home late and forgot to take them in. It's an old truck so they just popped the lock and took them. I called the cops and all they told me to do was go check pawn shops and I never heard from them again. Like, what is the counter here? Is it better to just keep non violent offenders locked up forever at taxpayers expense? The recidivism rate is high because of the apathetic private prison industry, conditions inside the prisons and the court systems that create catch 22 situations for people who are going through difficult times, neither of which are the fault of the largely impoverished public who would choose to have better lives if they could.
@granudisimo
@granudisimo 2 жыл бұрын
You also forgot to mention how this shit turns prisons into literal crime colleges, where a non violent drug offender learns some gang shit to sell drugs more efficiently than before and in more dangerous territories, since being labeled a convict makes it trickier to earn an honest living once you come out (and your certain loss of acquisitive power would anyway force you to move to more dangerous parts of town, where rent is cheaper and business owners, by necessity of their surrounding demographics, tend to be less picky about who they hire, since it means some of them might be ex-cons themselves) Such incentivisation of recidivism can justify police militarization as well as other ways of slowly installing a police state. Or TL;DR: Corruption and fascism are part of a self perpetuating ecosystem inhabited by the greedy and the power hungry. Seems you haven't forgotten about it now that I've read your post again and saw you mention recidivism caused by prison conditions. I'm sorry, I just wanted to elaborate and got carried away.

i worked in retail for a short time during the holiday season. One day my supervisor told me that number one most stolen type of item was from Section O/infant and toddler care department. From clothes to shoes to diapers. Basically anything related to the needs of very young children gets nabbed from the shelves all the time. Our high-value electronics were never touched, always locked by the manager, but a lot of the shelves in the infant section were always some level of empty and hard to keep in stock. To be honest, I almost cried when I heard that fact. And while shoes were stolen pretty frequently from my experience, it was always *school-age to very young children's shoes*. People don't usually steal things from malice but from desperation, this idea that crime is only done by "evil people who need to rot in jail" is a myth and it's really harmful to any kind of restorative justice.

The song "institutionalized" by Kendrick Lamar summarizes this whole crime thing up perfectly, "If I was president, Id pay my mamas rent, free my homies n them, bullet proof my chevy doors lay in the white house and get high." What Kendrick is saying, specifically in the context of this song, is that your priorities, your desires, how you think and relax, are shaped by the time you spend being poor, by capitalism. In his case its being "trapped inside the ghetto." Peoples priorities when they are poor are to get shit, to have nice things, because that's all you can have when every day fucking sucks all the time. So when your state (aka government body) is poor, when you don't address the broken housing market or do anything but pass band-aid compliance theatre bills (this is a democrat problem yes but the republicans just want to commit poverty-cide so no im not saying conservatism fixes this) you end up with shit like this happening. The California democrats keep up a song and dance, but never once intended to actually amend poverty-factors in the state because that would mean spitting in the eyes of the very corporate benefactors that line their pockets and pay for their Little Saint James flight tickets.

As a kid, we always went over to my aunts house on Christmas Eve. One year, some assholes broke in to our home while were out and stole ALL our presents right from under the tree. I like to think theres a special place in hell for ppl that steal kids presents on Christmas Eve. Crime always goes up around the holidays here in Toronto too. Another year, I was shopping at THE GAP and had my purse stolen, filled with the Christmas cash my dad gave me to buy presents. One second I am trying on a puffer vest, had my back turned and BAM, wallet snatched! 😫

I got charged petty theft for stealing 100$ in food. Does the ass clown in the beginning segment think I would have been better served being thrown in jail (I'm mentally disabled and trans btw) and then barred from the social welfare I currently receive? If I didn't get disability and food stamps, I'd have to steal, MORE to survive.

Are you also a minor? Because that makes a HUGE difference as to whether you should be held accountable for your choices. Like bruh, steal less at a time so they don't care.

Worked at a CVS until I quit a few weeks ago, they cared way more about how many memberships we sold than they did people stealing makeup or whatever lmao

WHY DO THEY CARE ABOUT THAT?! They did the same thing to us when I was at Best Buy and it's so, so dumb. I never did it. Nobody even wanted it in the first place, so what did they want me to do? Keep badgering customers to get something they don't even want? *What a wonderful idea!* That's how you get return customers!

I live in California, and my local news radio station has quite literally nothing to talk about so they keep talking about the "crime wave" when they can't talk about traffic.

I've met people who take advantage of the law where they steal under the felony amount because they know they will get a slap on the wrist if they get caught. So I agree that the new law contributes to thefts

These smash and grabs are not from the dollar stores, grocery stores, because they don't have high priced items.
