I have first hand experience driving in Ecuador. 3 weeks ago I rented a car in Quito. In Quito, driving can be horrendous as there are areas where there is no paint to indicate any lanes so people just make up their own and they drive very aggressively. Surprised I made it out of Quito unscathed and credit that 100% to God answering my prayers to protect my family. The roundabouts in certain areas of Quito are NASTY. I then drove to Cuenca, which was fine except the roads in Ecuador are very unpredictable. Unmarked random speed bumps, areas where asphalt turns into dirt road all of a sudden, etc. People ( including a group of kids) that will block the road until you pay the $1 toll😂. After Cuenca, we drove to Vilcabamba, where we were stopped at a checkpoint and I showed my Idaho DL and passport and was let through no problem. Then drive through Guyaquill ( thankfully no incidents) and on to Ayampe. To end our trip drove from Ayampe to San domingo and then back to Quito ( where we got stopped at a checkpoint by the airport and I got a ticket cause my adult child wasn't wearing her seatbelt). Turned the rental car in and caught my flight. In short, I probably won't rent a car in Ecuador again but I am glad we did and it went as well as it did as it enabled us to really explore the country how we wanted to and we had lots of flexibility.
@FallofftheMap11 ай бұрын
Last time one of my friends visited and rented a car he ended up having me drive it for him because he found Quito driving way too difficult. You’re a brave soul for doing that much driving on vacation. You aren’t kidding about the unpredictable conditions on the roads. I was once driving a road from Esmeraldas to Ibarra at night. 90km speed limit. No lights along the road. There was some little car following close behind me, kind of using me as a guide through the dark difficult road. There was a giant unmarked speed bump. I hit it at full speed and somehow managed not to break my old 4x4 and retain control. The little car behind me was not as lucky and didn’t make it. Not sure if they crashed or just broke something, but that NW corner of Ecuador is too dangerous to stop and help someone at night.

It’s not that most of the other expats are wrong, they’re just describing their experiences from within the few parts of Ecuador that have remained safe throughout this crisis. In particular, Cuenca remained relatively safe, so their advice is fine for that particular area. Cuenca is kind of a safe little expat bubble. There is one guy in Manta that does seem to have his head in the sand about what is happening in his city. Because I spend half my time in Quito in a mixed neighborhood where there is some mafia presence and the other haft out on my farm in an area where there are very few foreigners I get a significantly different experience and view of what is happening. My opinion, and I would consider this only a semi-educated guess, is that this was the first battle in what is going to be a long war between the narcos and the state. Things are likely to quiet down for a few months, but the narcos will reorganize and adapt their tactics, probably running surveillance on the military and police to figure out where some of them live so they can get at them through their families just as they do in Mexico.

Do Ecuadorians in Quito pull over to the right to make a left hand turn as well? So strange. And dangerous.
@FallofftheMap11 ай бұрын
It depends. If there is oncoming traffic that will require them to stop and wait before turning left they sometimes pull to the right side to be out of the way before making their left hand turn, but it’s inconsistent and maybe happens about 20 percent of the time in the city and slightly more often in the surrounding countryside, making it completely unpredictable. I understand the thinking, Ecuadorians understand that other Ecuadorian drivers are extremely impatient and will try to push around them so it’s best to just get out of the way and pull to the right side of the road while signaling and preparing to turn left, but it only makes sense in a broken system where no one even knows the traffic rules.

I agree with your analysis of Ecuador in both of your KZbin videos. Regarding the extortions, even poor people are now paying $2 a week for protection. Those people are really poor and can't afford to pay. I'm hoping that Ecuador becomes a state as Salvador Bukele-like government but, the corrupt political system won't allow it. The politicians work for the narcos and not the people. Also, the problem is the justice system is so corrupt, and it's for sale to the highest bidder. It's common knowledge, that to become a judge in Ecuador you have to buy in, between $30000 to $50000 to be assigned a judge. Of course, the government will deny that. I currently live in Guayaquil where it is super dangerous according to the stats and it has affected my day-to-day sports activities. I'm part of a cycling group that goes out at night and now we are more careful where we travel. We used to go out to different routes including Duran which is very dangerous without any problems.. Now we only have two or three destinations that we mainly go to. The group has been robbed twice in the last 5 years. We are careful now, who we include in our WhatsApp groups and our cycling trips. We also do mtb and travel on weekends to the mountains. we have to be careful on the road because we do not want to get hijacked by another car bumping into us. So we have to travel during the day and together with other cars... we are at a stage that Colombia was in back in the 90's. It's the same playbook.

I assume it’s because they don’t really know who is at fault until a judge reviews the facts and hears the arguments, and it’s assumed a lot of people would just flee rather than pay more than they make in a year. My little brother and sister-in-law were visiting a few years ago. Their bus driver took a corner too fast and rolled the bus. He climbed out the window and ran off before the police could arrive and arrest him. He probably would not have been able to pay whatever penalty was determined by the courts because one passenger died and many others were badly injured. Since Ecuadorian prisons are some of the most dangerous in the world, if you find yourself in that situation it could easily be a death sentence since if you can’t pay the penalty to get out you probably can’t pay the gangs that will try to extort you in there.

What’s up my nose is the least of my worries. The best video format is just using whatever is at hand even if it isn’t perfect and not worrying about the one or two people that bother to complain.

How could you see his mustache if he was wearing a ski mask?
@FallofftheMap11 ай бұрын
Because his upper lip was sticking out of the mouth hole of the ski mask. It’s part of what made it weird and memorable. In retrospect, and now knowing this was the first day of the war between the Ecuadorian government and the narcos my guess is he was out deliberately scaring people in traffic as a form of protest against the government. I think that might also be why he shook hands with the motorcycle behind me that was breaking the 2 people on a moto rule. In the first few hours there were a lot of people doing their typical silly protests before they realized how serious it was.

Dude, if you're afraid of random prople in ski masks robbing you, you're living in the wrong place. When people come here you need to shop around. Ecuador is very different from side to side and top to bottom. Advice to Americans: Don't drive in Ecuador. Taxi's are cheap and cars are expensive. Your driving habits, things you take for granted, can't be counted on here to keep you safe. The driving habits here are VERY different than what you're used to. People don't have insurance here, so accidents are actually rare. That said, I was hit on my motorcycle in a roundabout. This is the only accident Ive witnessed personally. My mistake? I was in the right by American standards, but I was at fault by Ecuadorian standards. The guy came from my left (enough said for EC police to find me at fault). But the guy entered the roundabout from the keft side entrance and gunned it all the way across the roundabout to the right side exit, cutting through all lanes like lines dont matter. He wasn't even in the rou dabout when I entered it, so I didn't even see him. Solution: Watch yourself and your surroundings, expect the unexpected at all times, and dont relax. On the bright side, traffic laws are a bit squishy. If you need to do something sketchy, you'll probably get away with it,

I’m not really concerned about police, military, or security in ski masks, but a random guy cutting through traffic in a ski mask in a place that is way too hot to be wearing a ski mask is out of the ordinary. It’s not something I’ve seen in my 10 years here, and your comment about it comes across as both ignorant and judgmental. This occurred in the very first hours after the current conflict in Ecuador started, just after Fito escaped and as the news of the prison takeovers broke. There were a few folks sympathetic to the cartels out trying to intimidate people which is what I assume this guy was doing. This was in a location that always gets a roadblock during paros.

I Enjoyed the video. It’s interesting to see it from your perspective with what’s going on in Ecuador. Stay safe out there! Buy that property 😮

Thanks. I appreciate it. What’s your perspective/opinion about what is happening here?
@Ghos3tfac3e11 ай бұрын
@@FallofftheMap of course! just from what I gathered from newsfeeds. It does almost seems like similiarities of narco terrorism especially when Pablo was in power. The government has allowed it to spiral out of control and this has made the Ecuadorian government look even more weaker with the stunt the criminals pulled on live TV. What do people like to do? Watch TV? So I am pretty alot of folks there saw it happening live. People are going to feel more scared because of this. Seems like the people need to rise and fight for a good cause to weed the criminals back in place. El Salvador is a great example. Maybe The Ecuadorian government should reach out for assistance from the their president 🤷🏻♂️

You are spending too much time on the farm. You need to get back to work. Amentum bought PAE and DynCorp. Two places you have worked for. When you get on with Amentum they will use your PAE employee number from your time in Antarctica. Maybe from DynCorp if that is who you were with in Kwaj. I have been a few places you have been. I know people that know you, but we have never met.

You are at your own risk. South American counties are cheap to live for a reason.

I feel like you’re at your own risk most places. Everywhere has some type of problem or another, well, almost anywhere. NZ and Japan both felt extremely safe. I definitely experienced more crime in the U.S. than in Ecuador. It’s just that in Ecuador there are moments when it all goes bad like this. In the U.S. it was never as intense as this but it was constantly shitty.

The most important lesson that Afghanistan taught me it that it can always become worse.

Dont worry bout cheif , EQ is a blessed country and this too will pass. Just be careful use common sence.
@FallofftheMap11 ай бұрын
Yeah, my impression is the most likely outcome is Ecuador will come out the other side of this stronger, but it’s not a sure thing. A lot of countries have fought the narcos and lost.

@@FallofftheMap We wont. Fuck the narcos, unfortunately EQ is situated between the largest producers of cocaine.
