This was the most validating apology in any TV show. I loved it when it happened. The way these characters were written was so amazing.

Their dance scene at the "whoop-dee-doo" was magical! Kudos not just to them but also to the costumer (her red dress!), set designer, and camera folks. Great! The scene where they plan their nice future home - but the fixed social class system of KY has them forever doomed.... very sad. 😢 When "the rubber hit the road," Boyd chose himself over Ava.

It wasn't until the rubber hit the road. Boyd always chose Boyd. From the pilot onwards. He manipulated Ava enough to get her to bend to his will. He always chose his own greed over her. He lusted after her but never truly loved her. Even when she gets shot in Season 2, instead of going after Dickie for revenge, he chose to cut a deal to get the Bennett's money. They weren't a love story, they were a toxic and dark coupling.

Yes, Boyd is a charismatic narcissist. The rubber is always on the road. Nevertheless, the dance scene is poignant for its juxtaposition of fleeting hope and joy of common people aside the reality that they will always be shut out (as they are by the Dixie Mafia, while househunting, etc.). @amrateeka

I was going to say, why didn't Ava marry Boyd instead of Bowman. But they already mentioned that he creeped her out at the time. Then, he saved her life at the cabin. She warmed up to him and saw him in a new light.

Boyd and Eva were great together in the entire Justified series.

I loved Boyd but Ava was a terrible character beginning in Season 4.

Boyd is such a masterclass manipulator. Interesting how some of these comments think Boyd is genuinely apologetic. Remember, Boyd was witness to the last time Bowman beat the sh-t out of Ava because she called Boyd creepy to his face. And we know Boyd has lusted after Ava for a long time. He isn't there to apologize because he means it. He has lost his flock, his father has taken everything from him, and he has nowhere to go. He knows Ava is probably a easier target to manipulate and he does successfully. He very quickly after this ends up moving into her home. Boyd never loved Ava, he loved the idea of Ava but she was always a concept. Never a real thing.

I dunno if that's fair. I think Boyd truly believes the crap he spews. I don't think he's really manipulating anyone. People like him don't go around thinking about how they'll take advantage of people. They just JUSTIFY their behavior by genuinely believing it. Boyd is always looking for the next best thing. When he has something, he will inevitably lose interest in it. And then convince himself of the next best thing. Raylan thinks he's the hero, so he neglects everyone around him and loses interest in them because he, too, is looking for his next kick. Just like his dad looked for the next scam to get away with. All these men live their lives chasing things they'll never get and justifying the chase with various reasons. Boyd truly loved Ava. Until he didn't anymore. Because he found his next interest. Boyd's issue is he doesn't know what love is at all.

@@knightartorias1825 I don't think you can truly love someone if you don't know what love is at all. I'll agree that he loved what Ava represented. He loved the idea of being an outlaw and a romantic. He loved the idea of riding off into the sunset with his woman. But did he actually love and cherish Ava? No. He never actually can show her love. Even when you think Boyd is going to get back to Dickey for shooting Ava, he ends up finding a more important cause (getting the Bennett's money). I never questioned if Raylan was truly and genuinely in love with Winona. He is willing to lose his career and even his life for her multiple times (putting the money back and organizing Nicky Augustine's murder to protect her and their baby). Their issue is that love alone is not enough to prevent their history from repeating itself when the parts of who they are that didn't work remain.
@knightartorias18254 ай бұрын
@@amrateeka Raylan only wanted Winona after he didn't have her. Both men are juxtaposed by their inability to appreciate what they have. They both chase what is, effectively, a hamster wheel of revenge, money, justice- whatever. So much so that they can't stand just living life happily with people they love.

@@knightartorias1825 Raylan wanted Winona while they were married too. We learn he was very faithful and loving to her but as he says during Season 1 there was only so far Winona was willing to go given Raylan's own issues. Winona understandably wanted more in life and with a partner. And so she left him. I do think he regrets losing her for sure but it's not like he wasn't in love with her while they were together.
