On November 27, 2019, approximately 3:50 a.m., Newport News officers were dispatched to the area of 24th Street in reference to a report of vehicle tampering. While en route, officers were notified of gunshots fired in the 1400 block of 24th Street.
Upon arrival, officers located 48-year-old Calbert S. Thomas suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He died a short time later at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Thomas saw someone tampering with his vehicle. He went outside to confront the suspect and was shot.
