Criminal trials to be televised for the first time in UK as cameras allowed in court today

A KILLER has been jailed for knifing his granddad to death in Britain’s first TV sentencing hearing.
Ben Oliver, 25, got a life sentence with a minimum term of ten years and eight months for the manslaughter of David Oliver.
Judge Sarah Munro QC told him: “The seriousness of the offence justifies a life sentence and that is the sentence I must therefore impose upon you.”
She called it a "complex sentencing exercise" but declared Oliver was a "dangerous offender".
Oliver, of Bexleyheath, South London, killed his 74-year-old granddad David in January last year.
He texted his mum afterwards: “Mum, I’ve killed granddad. I love you.” He also told his gran “he can’t hurt you anymore, nan”.
His nan last saw David after taking him a coffee and a biscuit. Oliver brutally stabbed him later that day. There were 21 stab wounds to the face and seven to the torso.
Judge Munro said Oliver was "entirely cooperative" with the police. His nan told officers: "We all wanted to kill him."
The judge also accepted that his autism and past experiences contributed to the manslaughter.
She said he had a troublesome home life, difficulties at school and did not thrive, adding: "You were irreparably damaged."

Defendants are entitled to a degree of privacy because they may be found not guilty. In my opinion, I think that a NG verdict should mean that the defendant can pick up the shreds of their life and should have as little damage inflicted on it as possible. Televised proceedings means that trials become entertainment where the lives of citizens are at stake.

They will only televise the sentencing notes and not the trial or any preliminary hearings. The sentence is usually passed weeks or months after the verdict/guilty plea for serious crimes. It depends on pre-sentencing reports etc. The usual reporting restrictions will still apply.

Don't take it for granted. It takes many centuries to nurture a justice system. Who can forget the chimney sweep boy who found a ring in the Thames mud-flats. Took it to a jeweller to be valued, and the jeweller stole the stone. Turns out it was the Queen's jeweller, but the case went to court and the boy won.

I watched the 20minute video and found this case truly truly sad… But most people wont watch it and absolutely jump to conclusion on thinking 10years was ridiculous of a sentence. He will most likely not be released after 10 years anyway, as showed in the longer video that man’s impact of life’s trauma is so deep that there is such a low chance of turning things around for him. Truly truly sad of a story.

@@FloatingCroc Nothing has changed yet, but when/if he appeals his sentence or reaches his parole date you will have the opinions of 2 sets of people: The ones who bothered to watch the full sentencing where this young mans brutal life is laid out, and the ones who saw this edit. You don't have to scroll down far to find people complaining about the leniency of the sentence, and public opinion has some capacity to change decisions, not as much as we probably like to think, but its there. As you say so far "Nothing has changed apart from it being digitally recorded" So other than for entertainment purposes, whats the point? Why risk corrupting the system?

Privacy is extremely important. When your sense of privacy is violated, that feeling doesn't just "go away", it can leave a permanent scar. As for judging other people, other human beings don't possess GOD-levels of knowledge to do this, so therefore cannot deem themselves suitable to do so in the first place. Human beings are limited to learning, preventing, preempting, brainstorming, and teaching others *what they know to be true.* As far as I'm concerned, I would simply tell anyone (were I "invited" to go to court (which is what it is - a *summons))* that their "law" is against my religion, as they're defying certain, more reliable scripture, in my estimation. The onus would be on _them,_ to persuade me to come over to their side.

As far as I'm concerned, it ought to be up to a culprit, to right any wrongs themselves (to their victims) unconditionally voluntarily. A trial - and the presence of other people - aren't needed to establish this. The whole thing is a joke to me - a pernicious control mechanism that STILL pervades society and undermines the nature of the human spirit.

I have a female friend who wanted a divorce on the grounds of adultery. She has autism she was told you no longer get legal aid for family court unless it’s on the grounds of domestic violence or statuary rape she was advised to report one of these allegations to get legal aid , that’s why family courts should ever be open courts
