I didn’t see a comment about it but, the Joker doesn’t know who Batman is. He just knows there’s a relationship between Batman and Rachel. That’s why he switched the address because he knew whoever Batman is, cared for Rachel enough to give him a dilemma of saving someone he loved or saving Dent which is supposed to be the good choice.
@carl_anderson93155 сағат бұрын
Exactly. He doesn’t know who he is. When he threw Rachel from the window, Batman didn’t hesitate to throw himself to save her. The Joker then understood that Rachel was someone Batman was willing to give his life for.

"so none of the stories are true?" It's an old comic nod, the joker always tells people multiple different stories to why he is the way he is. An acid bath, mob induced reconstructive surgery, or just a really bad day. At which point batman would say "none of those origins are really yours" and the joker always replied "when it comes to origin stories, I prefer it to be multiple choice". Always is something like that in the comics where joker takes a given factoid of himself and flips it person to person..... Thus to this day no one knows what his REAL background is.

Great reaction Coby like always, this movie is so good. Ledger absolutely OWNED that role. He was incredibly unhinged. Seeing this in theaters was so amazing. One of the best films ever. It just is unrelenting. Heath Ledger asked to direct and film the fake Batman hostage video. He improvised the entire dialog. During the Batman/Joker interagation Heath told Christian Bale to actually hit him. And another fun-fact about that mid-movie scene with the Joker crashing the party: that was the first time Maggie Gyllenhaal and Michael Caine saw Heath in his makep. The makeup, combined with his unhinged behavior, elicited truly panicked reactions. Go back and watch Maggie... she is kegitimately freaked out and not acting. And in the hospital scene between Harvey and Joker Because he's a master manipulator. He knew that there was a 50/50 chance that Dent would pull the trigger especially in his current mental state. He wanted to mess with him. The joker may not care much about his life but he wouldn't want Harvey to be the one to kill him. He wanted batman to have that honour. This is the brilliance of the Joker. The illusion of choice. He gives Dent the option to him right then and there, to end the madness or join it´s ranks. The choice is simple, because there isn´t one. If you look closely at the Joker´s finger he is holding the gun hammer, even if dent pulled the trigger, the hammer wouldn´t fall. Keep up the good work.

LOOK AT ME! Heath Ledger was a method actor who got deeply into his roles. With Joker, this is what he did, taken from IMDB "In preparation for his role as the Joker, Heath Ledger hid away in a motel room for about six weeks. During this extended stay of seclusion, Ledger delved deep into the psychology of the character. He devoted himself to developing the Joker's every tic, namely the voice and that sadistic-sounding laugh (for the voice, Ledger's goal was to create a tone that didn't echo the work Jack Nicholson did in his 1989 performance as the Joker). Ledger's interpretation of the Joker's appearance was primarily based on the chaotic, disheveled look of punk rocker Sid Vicious combined with the psychotic mannerisms of Malcolm McDowell's character, Alex De Large, from A Clockwork Orange (1971)." I thought Jack Nicholson's performance couldn't be topped as the Joker, but Heath took it to a whole different level. He played it perfectly.

There’s many comments here talking about Batman doesn’t kill, but glossing over the reason given in Batman Begins. Bruce was going to kill his parents’ murderer, and when he made Rachel aware of it she slapped him twice in disgust, and declared that his father would be ashamed of him. That resonated with Bruce, and it became part of his makeup. Ras Al Gul wanted him to be an executioner as his final test and wouldn’t do it. The comics may have a different setup, but in these movies, that’s the reason why Bruce won’t kill, and even eschews guns (at least the hand held varieties).

Joker telling different stories about how he got his scars is a nod to Batman lore, specifically the popular 1988 graphic novel The Killing Joke. Both Burton and Nolan cite it as influential in their depictions. In the comic, Joker often gives differing, contradictory accounts about his past and is depicted as so crazy he doesn't really remember, stating that if he is to have a past he prefers it to be multiple choice. The comic does show a more definitive backstory for him, however. It's also the work that delved into the psychology of the Joker as a mirror to Batman, both driven to become what they are by similar singular tragic events, but they chose opposing paths. Yet Joker is desperate to prove they are really the same. The Killing Joke was adapted in 2016 into an animated film.

And yes you're crying at the end because it's awesome. The emotions and the way he describes him as a silent guardian, a watchful protector, and lastly, a Dark Knight. It kind of hits you in the face what a dark knight means and that it's Batman. The screen goes black, silent, and then Boom the movie title hits with music. Classic emding...

Just as Joker lied about who was at the addresses, he also most likely lied about the boat detonators "With the Joker, nothing is as it seems" The experiment wasnt about who deserved to be saved the criminals or the innocent, but whoever actually pulled the trigger would have proven his point. The likelihood of the boat with the civilians actually doing the deed was higher so that would have been "fun" for the Joker seeing them blow themselves up.
@CRTV199713 минут бұрын
30:26 Well in the comics there is a "definitive" origin for the Joker, though take it with a grain of salt since it comes from the character himself. The truth is left open to interpretation. In Detective Comics #168 (1951), Red Hood debuted, a criminal who fled to Ace Chemicals after a failed heist at the Monarch Playing Card Company. Chased by Batman he jumps into a vat of chemicals, emerging with bleached skin and green hair, becoming the Joker. Batman: The Killing Joke (1988) expanded on this, portraying the Red Hood as a mantle forced upon various individuals by the mob. In this version, a struggling comedian named Jack took on the role to support his pregnant wife, Jeannie. However, after a robbery at his workplace, went wrong, Ace Chemicals. He fell into the chemicals, transforming into the Joker. Though Joker states Batman 'throw' him into the chemicals. "If I'm Going To Have A Past, I Prefer It To Be Multiple Choice! HA HA HA!" - Joker (The Killing Joke)

For the uneducated, Batman started off in 1930s comics a Pulp Action hero who wasn't above killing bad guys as it was the thing in Pulp Comics. Vigilante-type heroes like The Phantom were what inspired Batman, but then the Comics Code Authority was established in light of some author who wrote book titled "Seduction of the Innocent" which tried to paint comics as corrupting American youth and thus the CCA demanded a changed of comics book characters; like Batman to no longer being a violent vigilante who used guns and killed bad guys. By the 1980s when the 1989 Batman film cam about, Bob Kane, one of the co-creators who unfairly got more credit than Bill Finger, showed Batman killing again when he had Batman casually kill criminals. The Batman Animated Series of the 90s, which was inspired by the 89 film, followed the more non-deadly Batman partly because it was meant to be a kids show and kids grew up on that version believing Batman didn't kill when it's not entirely accurate. I personally would like to see a Batman film with a story that starts Batman as a violent deadly vigilant but when he thinks he kills the Red Hood only to learn it resulted in the creation of the Joker, THAT'S when he decides to stop killing and be more heroic, but Joker and Batman's rogues like Two-Face, Riddler, etc. are a living reminder of the violent person he once was and they try to goad him into falling back on his old dark habits.

The pulp heroes were the precursor to superheroes. They weren't super. The just had skills, and training, or sometimes just good genes. My favorite was Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze. He was basically the Superman of pulp heroes. I started reading those books in high school, and was reading about zeppelins in the third one before I realized that they had been written in the 1930s.

So as many people have pointed out, the Joker switched the addresses, resulting in Bruce saving Harvey when he believed he was going to Rachel. What I haven't seen anyone mention is why Joker did this. It was not to fuck with him. It was a test or sorts, one he knew Batman would fail. As Joker says later on, Batman is truly incorruptible. Joker however, understands that Batman is a symbol and does not exist in a vacuum, and thus a human being, with very real human emotions and motivations resides underneath. Whether he knew that Bruce was Batman is inconclusive, but he knew at the very least, that whoever Batman was, he was in love with Rachel. This is the basis for the test. Batman as a symbol is incorruptible, but the man beneath the Bat is not above personal, selfish motives and desires and Joker wanted to see what the man beneath the Bat would choose. He switched the addresses because he wanted the man beneath the Bat to be confronted with the consequences of his attempt to be a personification of a symbol when he is in fact, still nothing but a man. The creation of Two Face is that consequence, because it is Bruce's human emotions getting in the way of being Batman that lead to the corruption of Harvey's soul. This is why Joker referred to Harvey as his ace in the hole, because it was never going to come down to a fist fight with Bruce. He was able to have Harvey as his ace in the hole because he always knew beforehand what Batman was going to choose.

The reason he’s licking the side of his lips, it’s because the scars make up were constantly about to fall off so he licks them to keep them on.

Bruce’s parents were killed in front of him. Killing isn’t a solution to his problems, he truly believes in law and order, even though he operates outside it to achieve his goals. And yes, Superman is the same, they don’t want to see anyone, even villains, die. He even says it in the first movie, when Ducard tells him it’s a point of view his enemies won’t share, “That’s why it’s so important.”

The man on the ferry throwing the trigger out the window is a former wrestler. I believe he was called Tiny Lister. He also appeared in the fifth element with Bruce Willis. This is such a good Batman movie. Also love the next one and the newest by an another director.

I get Coby wanting Joker dead and maybe he could escape if Batman puts him in prison but if he escapes, that's a failing that needs to be fixed as far as the city..that's not Batmans job to play God and be judge ,jury, and executioner. That's a vital reason we have a judicial system to protect us from ourselves or our emotions taking over completely and just responding to crimes on pure emotion in the moment...Batman knows this and knows the dangers of that and what he could become out in the streets of Gotham just taking out criminals left and right.

Gordon was, I think, a Sgt in the first movie and got promoted to Lt. for this movie, and then becomes Commissioner.

"code vs killing" is the standard superhero trope, & batman has it stronger than most (although not so much in his earliest days!)

Joker doesn't know he's Bruce Wayne, he only knows that Harvey's fiancee is having an affair with whoever Batman is. To be fair though, the story would work either way, because the Joker wouldn't wanna ruin the fun of having a Batman he can play with. In every DC media though, the unmasking of Batman is very much against Joker's interest, because that would mean the end of Batman, which means the game would be too easy and ultimately ruined. Joker as a character is basically obsessed with Batman and he wouldn't be able to live without him. These characters have existed for more than 80 years now, so their dynamic is very well fleshed out at this point and I'm happy to say that both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger has understood the assignment.

the scene where the joker was pressing the button for the explosion to go off right before the entire hospital, that was improvised and they only had one take at it because it was real so they just kept it in because it makes the scene more humorous and iconic

30:31 In one of the most popular comic books about Joker (Batman:The Killing Joke), he tells an origin story about how he came to be. But he starts off by indicating that the story could be true or not. That he doesn't remember anymore. And that if he is going to have a history, he'd prefer it be multiple choice. The multiple stories here are likely a play on that idea.
